Anti Virus Protection

My subscription is coming up again for Norton Anti Virus software. I normally get it for close to zero at Black Friday specials. Even free, I am not very happy with the software, so can anyone recommend other free software that is as good or better then Norton.

I've used AVG Free for years without problems. Others I know swear by Avast.

Everytime I've used anything but Norton's it's either ended up wanting to take over my computer, screwing it up or I've ended up with a Virus. Think I'll just stick with Norton's myself.

After taking a cue from CptnGimp several years ago I went with Avast and have been very satisfied. Norton and McAfee are way to bloated with BS and are memory hogs.

That's not true. There are many 'free' anti virus programs. I run AVG, switched from Norton a few years back. It's been better than Norton.

Even if your a Microsoft hater ctoom91 is right. MS Security Essentials is free and rated pretty high by sites that look down on Microsoft.

AVG is really good but recently got a lil memory hungry (why i would never go near Norton). Try http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download if your looking for the best "free" AV SW

Thank you all for your suggestions. I decided to give Microsoft Security Essentials a try. My reason for leaving Norton is that I got a bad virus on my machine that the Norton software did not remove. After contacting them through their chat line, they offered to remove the virus for a $100 service charge. I thought their customer service was attrocious.

I've used AVG for about 10 years now on my personal computer as well as all the computers I've built for people. The only person that's ever had a issue with it was my brother who continues to download free movies and games and crap that are of course loaded with virus's and mal-ware. I pretty much have to wipe his hard drive and re-install windows every 6 months.
