How much acidophilus in yogurt/Activia?
My daughter has been taking two acidophilus tablets in the morning and two at night since her injury in August 2009. We just dropped the night dose because she/we forget and she just doesn't want it. (Bowel program still going well after a couple weeks.) Now this morning she doesn't want to take the two in the morning either. She said she would rather eat the yogurt. Great, but how much yogurt would she have to eat? I've searched the web a bit and went to the Activia site but so far I've found no comparisions of capsule vs. yogurt.
It is Sunday, but maybe I'll give her doc a call tomorrow and see what they have to say about it. Last edited by Domosoyo; 11-15-2010 at 02:30 PM. |

Moved your question over here Domo ... I think you'll get more responses here !
Bill eats an Activia yogurt every night for a snack but her has an ileostomy so I can't speak to the affect on a bowel routine but it does help keep odours from getting too overpowering ... I suspect it should work as effectively as the pill if not more so !

Thanks, I'm not even sure what all this is for.
It is just something we've been doing for so long I don't even know why we do it. She is not on antibiotics and she has no other health issues other than the C4 SCI. Just one of a few things I'm starting to question right now. |

Active Cultures are active cultures, Activia is much branding and marketing. Any yogurt with active cultures is fine, the less sugar the better. Greek yogurt is very good and much higher in protein. Although you have to watch the fat content unless eating the 2% or non-fat. Eat the plain in moderation, has active cultures and better than activia, thats all hype.

Getting acidopholus in tablet form is awesome. Any other way there's calories associated with it. Stick with the tablets.

The trouble with tablets is the shelf life. It is manufactured, shipped, stored in your local health food store's warehouse, and finally in the health food store itself. Anywhere along the supply chain the tablets could sit unrefrigerated.

Good point! Make sure that you refrigerate opened bottles of acidopholus.

You can sprinkle an opened capsule of probiotics over food, as well. Most of them are tasteless (I hear!).
