I have been busy as a 3 legged cat in a sand box since I got back from Monroeville this past weekend. (Recapping): I got chosen to go on a draw HC hunt with The Rack And Beard Hunt Club in Monroeville, AL. This is the tenth year that the hunt has been held. The president of the club and the main host was Joe Dunning and it would be hard to find a nicer guy! He joins us in the ranks of SCIville as a C-level Quad. I am not going to try to name all the members of the hunt club and all the other HC guests that were there because I would be typing all night. Suffice it to say that the hosts (hunt club members) were GOOD FOLK and bent over backwards to accomodate all us gimps of all different ages and abilities.

My 16 y.o. son Trey went with me on the trip. The hunt started on Friday afternoon at lunchtime. I got hung up at work and was late driving down so I missed the big lunch they had prepared. Trey and I got there just in time to drive to the hunting land and get in a stand. Here is the cool part. All of the stands are HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE and most of them are elevated anywhere from 3 to 7 feet off the ground about 8' x 8' square. Trey and I sat in the "Wysteria Stand" over looking a nice food plot with about a 170 yard shot to the far side. We got in the stand about 4 PM CST. Wes helped get us set-up and wished us luck. As often happens on food plots the action started after the sun had been gone over the horizon for quite some time. A nice sized 4 point walked out at about 150 yards and we could see him well enough to know he was not a legal shooter. The club is 6 points or better. We watche dhim watch us for about 5 minutres and he finally started feeding out into the plot. The light continued to fade and 2 does came out on the left side at about 120 yards. Unfortunately it was so dark we could see them with our binoculars but not through our scopes. Also we could not be sure they were not button bucks so we watched them with our binos. Well wouldn't you know it about 8 yards down the left side a mature buck ran a doe out onto the field, did about 2 quick turns and they dissappeared back into the pines never to be seen again. It was really too dark to see them to shoot. I just know it was a nice size buck. Points????? Who knows. Others got 1 doe and 1 nub head buck.

Dinner that night was a gracious plenty fried fish filets and/or chicken. I had the AND plate. It was piled high with fries, hushpuppies, and cole slaw. After that a bunch of lies were told around the campfire. Hey Robin... it was during one of his lies... er.. uh I mean stories that Mike Schmitz told me you asked him to say hello to me. He did.

I was worried that Trey might get bored listening to a bunch of old geezers telling lies but he made friends with some other sons that were there and close to his age. They were seen running quite a bit from place to place which was good because after sitting in the van for 3 1/2 hours and then sitting in a deerstand for 2 1/2 hours a 16 year old has a bunch of energy stored up.

Joe Dunning is a very accomplished artist and I got to view some of his paintings that he creates with the brushes in his mouth. Extraordinary!!!!!

In a discussion around the campfire it was revealed that the hunt club members advised us there was no need to get up at daybreak unless we wanted to. They never see deer until about 7:30 or 8 AM. That was music to my ears after working a full day and then driving 3 1/2 hours to Monroeville. I told the hosts that we would be at the hunting lodge at 7 AM. Trey and I went to our hotel and turned in happy and with full bellies.

I woke up when the wake up call came through and heard the wind howling outside. I reset my alarm to sleep about 20 more minutes. BAD MOVE. Slept right through that bad boy and woke up at 7 AM when we were supposed to be there. Oops!! Trey was snoring and the wind was howling. I asked Trey how he felt about waiting a while. Bottomline is that we decided to scratch the morning hunt. I called to let them know we would not be coming and would be there for lunch. When we got to the lodge a lunch of soup and sandwiches was just being laid out. Turns out we were not the only people that passed on the morning hunt and the people that did go did not see a single deer. GOOD CALL TREY!!!

We spent the afternoon fellowshipping around the fire. I pulled out my guitar and played a few songs. The ones I could remember the words to. For some reason I was having a hard time remembering lyrics. DAMN LYRICA!!!!! I hate that drug.

Time flew by and it was time to hit the stands. Trey and I were honored to be assigned the stand named "Charles Raymond". It is the honey hole. It is an elevated shootng house about 8' x 8' with a ramp on about a half acre beautiful green food plot. This food plot is cut out in the middle of a 40 acre patch of timber that is basically in the middle of all the other land which is about 3 year old planted pines laced with hardwood bottoms. Wes felt confident we would get a shot here. Trey and I felt really good about our chances.

Well around us the shooting started about 5:50 while there was plenty of light left so we got our rifles positioned for a quick aim any minute. Another shot rang out about 10 minutes later. Surely things at Charles Raymond would bust loose any minute. More shots off to the north and then a close shot. SOunded like it came from Wysteria. The light faded on down to dark and we saw the truck lights flickering through the trees headed our way. Oh well.. That's why they call it hunting not shooting.!!!

The hunter on Wysteria had one down as we suspected and Trey ran down to help drag it to the truck. Unfortunately the doe turned out to be a one horned spike but it was a reall ybig deer so it ended up being a good cull buck anyway. It was probably 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 years old. Grand total for the night was 1 - Doe... The aforementioned spike... And a really big bodied 9 point.

The R&B Hunt clib has a really nice set-up for a clubhouse. It is at the house where Joe lives with his dad only a cou-ple of blocks from the courthouse square in Monroeville. Their hunting land is only about 12 to 15 minutes from there. They have built a permanent deer cleaning shed with counters and sinks for cleaning and boning the meat. A really nice set-up. The deer were hung up, skinned, and quartered in no time.

Dinner was DEVINE. Fall off the bone ribs that had been cooking all day why we hunted. Beans, potatoes, banana pudding, carrot cake.... OH MY!!!! By belly was bulging more than normal. All the club members and their wives and friends and friends of friends were there to treat us "guests" like royalty!! We did not have to lift a finger. I could get used to that.

They had a bunch of items to give away to names drawn from a hat. The biggy prizes were a 20 GA. Remingtom Over and Under, a Marlin .22 semi automatic, and a really nice Schrade knife... There were hats unbrellas, Bass Pro gift cards, flashlights.... and a goody bag on top of all that. My lap was full when all was said and done.

Trey and I both agreed we had a VERY GOOD TIME even though we did not get to pull a trigger. This was one of those hunts that ended up being about somethng more than the taking of game. Freindships were ignited and rekindled. Several of the hunters had been to the hunt for a number of years. One hunter received a shirt in recognition of attending all 10 years that the hunt has been sponsored. Small town USA is alive and well and full of NICE PEOPLE. I left knowing that God willing and enough luck for my name to be drawn out of the hat again I will be making another trip in the future to Monroeville, AL to see my new friends at The Rack and Beard Hunt Club.

Thanks again Chad for gettin me the info on this hunt.

Grange,
Thanks for the story. Even without the kill. A good time and reminder to me about the fun getting together with old and new hunt friends and being out in it.

Grange, surely that Lyrica was taking its' toll on you. Mike would NEVER stretch the truth. I set up a few hunts here in Virginia for Buckmasters several years ago and met Mike on one of those. He was still living in Virginia then, before he moved to TN.

Sounds like a great hunt. Too bad the deer are being uncooperative this year.
