Breathing Research

I received an e-mail from Dr.Gosharian who is doing research on restoring lung function after spinal cord injury. His website has been down, but is now back up. No new information at present, but he said he would be updating soon. Here is the link:

theophylin and 4ap?

Dr. Young, do you think there are or might be any beneficial effects of combining the two drugs?

I don't have a good answer to your question because there is no experience. To my knowledge, there is no theoretical reason for the two drugs to be antagonistic or produce unacceptable side effects when given together. However, I don't know of any studies either in people or animals that have looked at the combined drug treatment. Wise.

I sent an e-mail to Dr.Goshgarian regarding his research and if he had new information or new studies planned, here is his reply:

"Carl,
We were delayed in our studies and had to switch medical centers to the va in Detroit. We are now up and running again. It seems that acute theopylline administration (IV drug) in a patient that has been injured for years, doesnt have much of an effect. We believe that this is primarily due to atrophy of the respiratory muscles. Thus, even if the drug activates thelatent spinal cord pathways, if the muscles are wasted away, they cant do the work. Our latest findings, however, is that chronically administered
theophylline (AS a pill at home for several weeks) will repeatedly stimulate
the spinal cord pathways which conditions the weaker muscles and slowlybrings them back. Currently, we have about a dozen patients on the drug to test this possibility. We are now also planning studies to combine theophylline with other drugs to enhance its effectiveness. I need to update my website to include this information, but as usual there is always
something else that draws me away from this.

Dr. Goshgarian
