I had earlier posted a comment on the use of stem cells to treat autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Crohn's disease. This is not the same as the stem cell treatments that is being considered for spinal cord injury. It is a means of repopulating the immune system after killing off the existing bone marrow in the patients. The stem cells are removed from the patient's own bone marrow and processed to eliminate t-cells that make antibodies, the bone marrow is then killed by chemotherapy, and the stem cells are re-injected into the body. This procedure is commonly used to treat auto-immune disease and has been used for years.
