Here's How to Cure diseases and feed the Planet.

As A ex- brainwashed, capitalist / so called democractic born citizen who has been a sci for almost 10 years now and 42 years old yesterday, I have come up with a solution to all the world problems and cure for all diseases that a college history professor put in my mind almost 25 years ago.

His quote was

"you will always have misery and disdain amoung human beings when 5-10% of the population controls 90-95 % of the wealth and resources on the planet. We need to change this for the future"

My solution is of course ridiculous, full of folly, but I don't care.

Monetary Revolution!!!! "Tax the rich, feed the poor, till there are no rich no more." a quote from a protest song from a band called 10 years after circa 71

I have come to realize that no human being on this planet no matter what deserves so much wealth(100-mill to billionaires as examples). Why are we so brainwashed that spoiled rich is ok when so many others are sufferring???

Until the percentages I have mentioned above change, mankind will always be struggling to survive and most of us will get the short end of the stick.

Yes I may be envious, jealous or whatever, but actually 10 years of sci will do that to you.

Yea so I vented in the cure forum, big deal!

Your point is understood

Unfortunately we need money and lots more of it to find a cure. Enough money will solve the problem.

I'd say be careful hc that you don't underestimate, bemoan or begrudge the millionaires and billionaires out there who are pumping money in the form of venture capital into the very companies within the private sector who are trying to develop therapies to help us. Yes, they are doing it for profit but who cares. Is your federal government going to fund it? maybe? maybe not? And you can forget medical altruism.

Capitalism is what makes this country the envy of the rest of the world and in turn creates competition of which there is ultimately a winner. I want one of our facilities, universities, institutions, hospitals, businesses to be that winner.

By the way hc how rich do you think the artist (band) is who wrote and sang that song?

John, when was the last time you gave away a billion dollars to healthcare? And will all those poor folks in Cabrini Green suddenly start working once you have fed them and taken all of Oprah's hard earned dollars? Communism does not work. It kills any incentive to work hard because there is no reward for working , or even thinking, harder than the next guy.

Oprah, Hard earned dollars, give me a break!!!

Sue I do not endorse communism, but socialistic reforms. oprah is a great example, she has used the ignorance of the masses to amass such a wealth, I say there is a problem. She's a friggin talk show host worth billions!!!!

greed prays upon the ignorance of the masses. For you to say oprah may have to use her "hard earned dollers" that is probably the only ridiculous statement you have made here.

How does oprah work harder than a bricklayer who works 50-60 hrs a week working his balls off for 50-60 thou a year yet compared to some "show biz" bitch like oprah who probably never sweated in her life!!!! and has more land and money than she can ever use.??? I hate her and other filthy rich oppressive people and only hope there is a hell for those to burn in.

Get a grip folks. To say how great capitalism is when 2/3 of the world is in poverty or at war and aids all but destroying the 3rd world countries, still shows how most people still have blinders on when it comes to issues outside our so called great capitalistic US. Disparity of wealth!!!!!

and by the way Chris, alvin lee and ten years after are not multimillionaires. As usual the record company made most of the money off that song and many many artists as you know get screwed by the record labels or management, another wonderful capitalistic venture.,the recording industry. lol

I am sorry I even brought this up and hope this thread closes. As I said before , till you change the disparity of wealth on this planet we are doomed to violent revolution in the future.

One last point, all the major drug cartels love to use the tools of capitalism. I don't have the answers just the questions.

Solutions

Human Cannonball,
Your thinking is noble, and as you stated, full of folly. You could set your self on fire for just about any cause, but few will see or care. Most people are consumed by this monster machine that has run out of control. To get in the way you would be squashed, it's like the little snowball at the top of the mountain, after it has traveled so far so fast for so long, it gets so huge it can't be stopped. So before I get going I think I'll stop! I don't care either!

The Human C,

Thanks for your vent. It is a good vent and it gives me an excuse to vent, too.

Last night, I stayed until 11 pm in the lab answering questions from reporters that were calling for reactions to President Bush's statement. I told them the decision was a major step forward although I had wished that he had gone one step further and allowed NIH to create new stem cell lines if the current ones are not available for study or are not of sufficient quality or diversity to fulfill the needs of researchers who wish to develop stem cell therapies.

Afterwards, I checked all the web sites and found a majority of the postings to be against NIH funding of human embryonic stem cell research. Driving home, I listened to the story of the bombing of the pizza parlour in Jerusalem and the senseless killing that is gong on. I happened across a Christian radio and heard all these talking heads chortling about how Bush's decision will stop all these babies from being killed, how he has stopped us from sliding down the slippery slope, and how this decision supports the sanctity of life.

This morning, I woke up deeply depressed. I remember Christopher Reeve giving a speech to the Society for Neuroscience last year, saying that he can accept it if the science was hard and that there are many scientific problems that still need to solved for a cure. He said that he just cannot tolerate the situation if we don't get to a cure because of money or politics. I feel the same way.

The main obstacle to a cure use to be the difficulty of the science and lack of money. Now, the main obstacles are politics and unwillingness to fund the research. The money is there but the will is not. It is so sad and frustrating. Irrational fear and ignorance are our enemies.

Wise.

I used Oprah because you live out that way, John. She has had the smarts to become the top rated daytime talk show host and without a bunch of baboons breaking chair over the heads of fat women in spandex mini skirts. She's worked hard, invested her money, operates a major charity and now has started up a monthly magazine.

Would you prefer I use Bill Gates? His family foundation literally does give billions to health care world wide. His goals to wipe out measles is commendable since that disease kills people in most 3rd world countries.

And I am with Christopher Reeve on this one, Wise. I have absolutely no plans to spend a 10th anniversary in this chair. Have passport--will travel! I have found the daily grind much easier to deal with since I started marking this last years' days off on a calendar.

I also cannot believe an entire denomination (Southern Babtists) cannot figure out the difference between abortion and leftover embryos is beyond me. Maybe if they were given a few vials as center pieces for their next dinner parties...

We are finally getting some funds going but now the science is being told to stop. Will any American scientist accept the position of head of the NIHs with such restraints? I hope no one does accept it. Not without full scientific integrity anyway.

And where did Bush come up with 60 lines? Unless there are a lot of secret private companies out there then he can't add along with his problems with the American language.
