The Oil Has Reached Lake Pontchartrain

This is the lake [A on the map] I've lived near my entire life. Prior to Katrina, I lived south of it, now I live north of it.

Now they're collecting tar balls from the lake. From the map, you can see how the oil had to travel westward and through smaller waterways as it moved inland to enter Lake Pontchartrain.

Hi Todd (and welcome back!),
I just saw this on the news tonight. It is sickening and I am so sorry that it is impacting more and more each day. I still think my original plan of having the BP execs coated with oil, left on a barrier island with a fishing pole ("whadda mean, you can't eat the seafood?") is the only just punishment for these greed mongers.

Oh, it's disgusting. Thank you, Eileen. On a good note, thanks to Bobby Jindal, we can now pack heat in church.

WHO WOULD JESUS SHOOT?

It all just makes me sick. I made my daughter's boyfriend cut the big picture of a pelican off of the front page of the paper today because I could not bear to look at it after I caught a glimpse.
A couple weeks ago I read in the Minneapolis paper that "our" loons will be returning to a "death trap" when they migrate. It makes me cry every time I talk about it.
When we were at the lake and one came near our dock and later at night when they were calling each other my heart hurt.
I come from a blue collar family and when I think of the hard working people in the fishing industry losing their jobs it is sobering. There was a woman on TV who had been shucking oysters for 11 years that was being laid off.
The map is interesting Todd. How are people coping there?

MSNBC reported an increase in people seeking treatment for depression and that one fisherman residing in Mississippi had killed himself over the loss of his livelihood.

Absolutely no sympathy should be given to me due to this oil spill because so far it hasn't affected me directly, I merely live close to it. The people affected directly are those cleaning it up, those who lost their jobs, and the thousands upon thousands of dead animals that have suffered from this disaster, not to mention the 11 workers killed on the rig when it first blew up.

I can only imagine the destruction of habitat (for both humans and animals). Having once lived in Biloxi and Pass Christian MS, we used to go fishing and shrimping all of the time on the Gulf. I cannot imagine the dead zone that is being created by this. Ponchartrain is one of the most beautiful lakes in the US. The Gulf coast will never recover from this.

PS Eileen: We should not boycott BP because they will need the money to pay for all of the mess. If they go bankrupt who will get stuck with the bill then?

My daughter was down there is June again (mission trip for the St. Bernard's Project) and just loves it there. She is sick to hear that the oil made it to the lake.

LindaT. I too am very worried about the loons. I would depress me a lot if I could not hear their wonderful call during the summer.

Aww! St. Bernard is the parish I grew up in (though I hesitate telling that to locals because it's assumed most from that parish are morons, maybe it's the chemical plant that is literally poisoning its citizens).
