Crawling backwards

I've been getting up on my knees (on all fours) as a part of my exercises. Started to try moving my legs in and out, which I could do. I tried crawling forward and couldn't get enough weight off of my leg I was trying to move forward without going into a spasm, and wanting to pull my pelvis in. So I remembered an old guy I was friends with at my physical therapy, say he would go outside and crawl backwards. So I tried to go backwards and instant tears came! It moved about a half inch, so I kept working and just is unbelievable! I was just wondering if It is normal to start going backwards instead of forwards, becuase he also couldn't go forwards?

Do you have hip flexion? That is what is needed to crawl forwards. Hip flexion is what will bring your knee forward with each 'crawl step'. I can see that going backwards is just about dragging the knee backwards with each 'crawl step', and wouldn't require any hip flexion and might be easier.

I know several individuals who crawl backwards better for various reasons. Some individuals do not elicit synergistic patterns in one direction while others have active hip extension. You may just be more coordinated in that direction (able to shift wgt and use core muscles to lift and or unwgt your pelvis). Keep crawling forward and backwards, it will help in the long run.

yes I do have hip flexion. I can see it start to move forward when I try but when I go to unweight my pelvis goes into a spasm. I had my b/f help and he said once I got the weight off it moved fwd but I guess I'm not able to get the weight off enough?
