It's funny, because my experience was just the opposite. When I was visiting Paris everyone was so very helpful, often resorting to charades to get past the language barrier. I don't know if it was because of my wheelchair, or what, but I learned not to pull out a small plastic folding map I had of the city unless I really needed it because Parisian's were instantly offering to orient me and give me directions. Sometimes I was just looking at the map more in a "you are here" sort of way than actually being lost or needing help, but the offers came freely.

I've been to Paris several times and each time I found the people to be very nice. If you try to speak THEIR language (using a French language book), they see that you are trying and respect that and are very responsive. Unfortunately, too many times Americans have presented themselves in an unfavorable light and many Europeans (not just the French) judge all Americans based on past experiences. It's too bad because Americans just want to have a good time and it is often misunderstood.

I L-O-V-E love Paris. Like Eileen, I'm not sure if it was the chair, but pretty much everyone was more than willing to give me a hand where needed. I also love trying to communicate with my limited French. I can see where this might become frustrating for people though, because there is no real desire on their part to speak English. But that makes sense because it's France.

Rude or not, I will always go back for the atmosphere and the food (YUM).

Love Paris, love Parisians. I found them to be soulful, warm, helpful and very generous. I wasn't using a wheelchair when I formed this opinion.

Working class Parisians rock. Upper class Parisians do not. And sometimes ppl think they need to act upper class...Monsieur, if you work the desk at a hotel in the hood that my friend and I got for $500/week pp, including airfare, you are not high-society enough to be a rude bastard. I KNOW I can't speak French. I tried to say Good Evening. I didn't know you spoke English until you got all condescending, you smug asshole.

Opinion formed as an AB.

I'd go back in a heartbeat but it's not on the top of my list. I need much more Rome, and my system is crying for some London or Dublin.

PS-That pyramid in front of the Louvre? Makes us Philistines LAUGH OUT LOUD.
