‘Strongest man,’ 104, dies after he's hit by car

New Yorker once lifted 3,200 pounds at Coney Island Amusement Park
Associated Press
updated 4:40 p.m. PT, Tues., Jan. 12, 2010

NEW YORK - A famed strongman who once lifted 3,200 pounds at Coney Island during its heyday and was still bending quarters with his fingers at age 104 died Monday after he was hit by a minivan.

Joe Rollino was struck as he crossed a major street in Brooklyn, and suffered a broken pelvis, head trauma and broken ribs. He died a few hours later at an area hospital.

Police said the driver was going the speed limit and had not been drinking. No criminality is suspected, but the driver was issued a summons for a defective horn.

I saw this on the news last night, including some pictures from his youth when he was rippled with muscles. Made me wonder how long he would have lasted if he had died from natural aging. It certainly looked like he might have a good amount of time left considering how strong and able he was at 104!

Just think, he was already 23 years old when the stock market crashed in 1929. Unbelievable to live that long and stay relatively healthy.

My grandmother lived to just short of her 103rd birthday, and had no senility. She could discuss politics, theatre, books right up to the end. The hardest part she said of living that long was to bury some of her children, who had died in their 70's. I sort of hope I have some of gram's genes.
