Width of posts
Can anyone tell me if it's my computer settings or the sites that need adjusting?
I use IE 6.0 and 95% of the time have no problems reading posts. Then...along comes someone who posts 1 thing that is over-wide and the whole thread goes twice as wide. This necessitates scrolling side to side to read the posts which is a royal pain. Before you all scream "Getta Mac" or "Use Mozilla" or something, we have 3 computers and a palm that all use IE and that's what I know. Also, due to wife's work computer, we need to use it. Help me...puh-leeze, this is driving me nuts! Kap "It's not easy being green" |

If someone posts something that's too wide [long url, etc], you can either suffer or ask them to edit it.

What I do if the post is lengthy is to copy it and past it into Microsoft Word. Then I don't have to scroll side to side.

I won't tell you to get a Mac...because the problem is worse on a Mac, and in Mozilla on either platform. URLs that are too long for the screen will break in later versions of IE, but not in Mozilla, or any browser on the Mac.
Don't piss me off or I'll run over your toes.

Steven:
I don't think we have to suffer through it if we do the following. As Dr. Young pointed out, it has to do with the length of the URL. You may also want to take a look at this free file that can shorten all URLs. http://snipurl.com/ PN [This message was edited by PN on 01-17-04 at 09:19 PM.] |

PN,
that is really interesting... this actually creates a unique and *permanent* URL address that points to the original one? What if this snipurl web site disappears? Wise. |

Dr. Young:
I do not think that snipurl will be disappearing anytime soon, but it is possible with all the .com that are now .dead. I first learned about snipurl while watching TechTV last week. Steve Bass (a long-time popular staff writer at PC World Magazine and is the president of the Pasadena IBM Users Group) was invited to talk about his new book, "PC Annoyances" and did a live demonstration of snipurl that appeared to impress Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton of the Screen Savers. Steve Bass, was also a guest on (to discuss his book) two different talk radio stations last week, KABC 790 and KFI AM 640, which both have computer shows on the weekends. PN, Steven or anyone...
A typical example of what I'm commenting about is the post in Life Forum, "best hobby past sci". There is a huge space between the icon and poster's name and the actual text. Again the text is wider than screen as well. Is this a text-wrapping problem on Josh's part or what? The url is not especially long, in fact is about the same as the other posts in other topics that are regular sixe on screen. I tried posting to word and then re-importing to c/c but that didn't change it, copy/paste to word just to read one topic is too much of a pain to bother with. I tried using the short url method Wise posted but that doesn't work either. Is there any way c/c can set up script length limiters so even when people who post like this it gets defaulted to proper size or won't accept their post and gives them error message about their post width being to wide? That would be courtesy of fuentejps's extra large image...it throws off the table width.
