Urinary meatus and urethral trauma and damage from indwelling urethral catheters is a major reason to avoid these for long term use. You need to talk to your urologist about changing to a suprapubic (SP) catheter instead.

Until then, are you properly securing your catheter to avoid the catheter tugging and pulling on your meatus?

Is your nurse an RN or LVN or do you mean an aide? An RN or LVN can change a SP catheter once it has been in place for at least 6 weeks (before that your urologist would need to change it), but they do need to learn how to do it with sterile technique, and with the special precautions that are required for a SP different from the urethral catheter. It can be irrigated for blockages just as with a urethral catheter.

The main precautions that are different with a SP are:
  1. The new catheter must be inserted within 1-2 minutes of the removal of the previous catheter or the hole can close up.
  2. Caution must be used to avoid inserting the catheter too far, as this can result in the catheter passing all the way through the bladder and into the urethra, and the having the balloon inflated inside the urethra instead of inside the bladder.

I've had one for years and it's worked great. I have to get it changed every two or three weeks because of sediment but otherwise it's been really simple. We changes at home without any problems. Hope this helps with your decision.

I get pants a little bit too big and I don't button them. If you do it just right, you won't have any problems with your parents putting it up but it takes a little trial and error. Every night I clean it with hydrogen peroxide/water mix just to get all the gunk and blood off of it. It's really been nice. I used to do straight cath but it required assistance so I opted for this. Hope this helps
