Quad info for shower chair
I just received my new shower chair and its not going to work. The DME fortunately is going to help get me into something that will work. We just spoke on the phone and have begun the research process to make sure it works out this time.
CC i need some info. Im a C5-C6 quad dependently using a shower chair. Had a PVC one but the castors rusted out. The one in the link is the new one but the handle bars were the back rest and it hurt like hell. Thinking higher back this time. Mariner chair Any info appreciated and thank you.

Take a look (in a couple of hours because our server is down at the moment) at www.GoesAnywhere.com. If any of our chairs look like they might work for you, give me a call or contact me through the website and we'll see if we help you out.

I am assuming this is for a roll-in shower?
Check out these (most are more expensive than a Mariner): http://www.brodaseating.com/products/commode.php http://www.snugseat.com/Default.aspx?ID=9208 http://www.activeaid.com/products/model_922.asp http://www.activeaid.com/products/model_600s.asp http://www.activeaid.com/products/model_480s.asp http://www.activeaid.com/products/model_496_5.asp http://www.invacare.ca/cgi-bin/imhqp...OID=-536886176 http://www.nuprodx.com/chair9000.htm (KLD) |

Wow, the rolex additions. This is becoming a pain n the ass, I don't want a different shower chair because I liked and am comfortable with the one I had in the past, but at the same time I can't afford to be going through these things at the rate of every 2-3 years. Maybe I should just get another one and try harder to prevent the rusting of the casters...

You need to check the specs before you buy anything that ALL of the parts ON THE ENTIRE CHAIR are rustproof. If the casters have expanding stems (as opposed to plate-mount), ensure that they are stainless steel and not just plated, and that the bearings are stainless steel and sealed. If they're not, they won't last.

Use WD-40. That's what the WD stands for: water displacing
For years I used an Eversest &Jennings manual chair in salt water to get me out diving. And religiously used WD-40. That chair lasted much much longer than it should have. |

Used it, worked for awhile just not forever. The old chair is broke and gone, while trying to replace the casters the frame busted due to it being seized up with rust.

That has been our experience with the PVC ones as well. My dad was an engineer, and used WD-40 like there was no tomorrow, but they still seized up on my mother's PVC shower-commode. He replaced them several times with other wheels that he was able to adapt, but eventually they had to just replace the entire commode chair.
Ours at work are custom made ActiveAids that we made sure were all stainless steel, and we have used the ones we have now for the last 9 years without any major repairs being needed. (KLD) |

Gotwheels, I
have the same mariner chair, and it has held up fairly well for almost 5 years,........except for that backrest. I'm not a quad, but I am tall. I unscrewed the nylon backrest, slid it up where the fabric starts to go over the bend in the canes for an inch or two and screw it fast again. Raising it that little bit makes a tremendous difference. I had to do it for a quad friend of mine too, and it gave him some much needed support. The stitching failed every 10 months or so, too. After the third time I found a local upholsterer who made me (3) extremely strong backrests for the price of one backrest from invacare. That things has held up amazing well ever since. I'm still on the first handmade backrest, with NO signs of wear. Invacare could make the same thing, but.... well you know how manufacturers are. ;-( If you like the flexibility of the Mariner, but hate the backrest, this might be an option for you....... Good luck.
