pimple or bedsore

Here is the deal. About 3 days ago I had a zit pop up below my buttocks. I do have zits come and go on my butt. I know its bad but i do take care of my self. Take showers daily, weight shifts, sleep on my belly or my side.So anyways I had one come up. My wife pulled a ingrown hair from it. It looks like a crater has formed and my wife says it is bigger but it isnt red, black or draining anything. I had my mom come look as when i first got injured I had one on my tailbone and she said it doesnt look like it. Can a pressure sore really come from a zit and not on a boney part? If there are any nurses i can take a pic of it and show you. I'm just nervous.

thanks
Shawn

Welcome to CC. A pressure sore can come on any part of the body where pressure has been applied. It is best to stay off any type of sore until properly healed. Skin care is very important amoung SPI's.

I've seen in the past that the nurses here recommend you posting a picture so they can help you better in dealing with it.

If its not in a spot that gets pressure I would think it would heal up pretty good. Keep it clean so no infection & no pressure. Keep a close watch on it.

If it is on the fleshy part of the butt where it joins the thigh, that is over a bone (the ischium). Sitting on any infected skin lesion (pimple, boil, cyst, etc.) can turn into a pressure ulcer. It may be an infected hair follicle instead of a pimple.

You need to use moist warm (not hot) compresses on it several times daily, keep it covered with a dressing that absorbs any drainage and keeps it moist (but not wet). You need to stay off of it. If it is not significantly better by Wednesday or Thursday, or if it gets red and hot around the open area, you need to see a doctor immediately.

You can send a photo (close up, well focused) to the SCI-Nurses at sci.nurse@hotmail.com

thank you guys for your help. I went to the doctor today and he said it was a hair follicule infected. I just don't undertand why it opened as big as it did. Its like a crater. But not red or draining anything.

Still important to stay off of it completely until healed. Good luck!

Absolutely- stay off of it until it is completely healed.

Better safe than sorry!

c5/6quad -- Hopefully your doctor echoed the advice given here to avoid pressure until it's healed, but did he tell you to do anything else to facilitate healing?
