Father’s crusade finances research

Awsume job Eric,

REBECCA HYMAN , Gazette Staff Writer 09/19/2004
TAUNTON -- Dr. Eric Ruby loves his son so much he decided to try to change the world for him. And he might just pull it off.

Ruby's son, Ethan Ruby, 29, was paralyzed from the chest down when he was struck by an sports utility vehicle while crossing a New York City street in 2000.

Since then his family has decided to turn the tragedy into a cause for hope, not just for Ethan but for the millions of others who suffer from spinal cord injuries (SCI).

"This is what Democracy is about, a person can make a difference. This is the key concept of what any individual can do in America," said Eric Ruby, a practicing pediatrician in Taunton for the past 27 years.

Shortly after the accident, Eric Ruby contacted his friend and state representative, James H. Fagan, D-Taunton, about the possibility of raising money for spinal cord research. Last month, a bill sponsored by Fagan and state Rep. Shirley Gomes of Harwich was signed into law by Gov. Mitt Romney.

Also, Maureen McKinnon-Tucker,

Resident helps win passage of spinal-cord injury bill

In late-August, Gov. Mitt Romney signed into law the Spinal Cord Injury Trust Bill, a bill expected ultimately to raise upwards of $1.5 million in funds generated by people who lose their driver's licenses for the third time. In order to regain their license, they will pay a $50 surcharge with $25 earmarked for this trust.
The trust will then use the money to fund ongoing research aimed at finding both ways to improve the quality of life for people living with spinal-cord injuries as well as potential cures for paralysis.
On hand for a formal presentation last week was Maureen McKinnon-Tucker, who was instrumental in getting the bill passed through both the House and Senate as well as ensuring Romney would sign it into law.
"The research will bring a general improvement in our lives with any new technology it can develop," McKinnon-Tucker said. "It may not mean a full cure at this stage, but I can look out a decade and see the benefit of it."
Massachusetts is the 10h state to pass such a bill.
