I ended up with ulcers in my esophegus due to the meds I am taking and my Dr. put me on reglan (metoclopram) and carefate for my stomach and throat, it keeps them under control.

Hi,

These drugs are prescribed for different stomach ailments. Nexium for acid reflux and Carafate to heal ulcers.

NEXIUM turns off many of the "acid pumps" in the stomach’s acid-producing cells. This reduces the amount of acid in your stomach. There’s still enough acid to help digest your food. But there’s less that could back up into your esophagus and cause heartburn pain—and possibly tissue damage, too.

Carafate Tablets and Suspension are used for the short-term treatment (up to 8 weeks) of an active duodenal ulcer; Carafate Tablets are also used for longer-term therapy at a reduced dosage after a duodenal ulcer has healed. It coats the ulcer.

You can consult your pharmacist if you think they may interact with each other.

i was given the nexium to help w/ the small amount of reflux i get, and the carafate b/c when the doc scoped my stomach [EGD] he saw some mild gastritis that he thought the carafate might help with.

i'm still having this problem, tho, where i gulp down large amounts of air when waking up and when trying to swallow excess saliva. it's strange, and i'd think it has to be a problem w/ the esophagus & stomach, so these meds ought to help the lining heal so this problem will go away.

doesn't carafate reduce base, while nexium reduces acid? so if i were to take too much it seems like there wouldn't be enough acid & base to break down food.

Nexium reduces the acidity of the stomach contents. Carafate merely acts as a coating to protect the stomach's lining from the contents of your stomach while it heals. Base chemicals found in gastric contents are either weak or in small quantities, thus gastric contents are strongly acidic, and irritating to areas outside of the stomach not designed for them, like the esophagus, or if the lining of the stomach has been otherwise compromised.
