transfering

This is mainly for quads like myself who transfer (i use a board) but paras if it pertains to you too, please chime in. I have my transfer down getting into my car and bed but I find that I can only transfer easily going to my right such as getting into my bed and car. If I'm riding as a passenger in a car I can get in but getting out is nearly impossible and its the same if I'm transfering to my left to get into bed - I can't do it. So can you guys transfer both ways with ease, if you guys can then maybe I have to work on this. Oh yeah, I have pretty much equal strength in my arms.

I'm the same and like you I have no idea why it should be easier getting out of my chair than it is getting back in.

Maybe it's physiological!

Same thing here, and also to the right for transfers. I have no idea, but I am predominantly right handed so maybe that has something to do with it? Of course that also means my joystick on my chair is mounted on the right, but fortunately the arm on my latest chair just swivels up. It was really a pain on the older chair where the arm had to literally be taken off.

I think it is really just a matter of practice. Things you do daily and don't even realize what you DON'T do. I transfer to the right to drive, but to the left for bed, so have daily practice at both. I would suggest finding a chair or couch that you could transfer to safely from your less used side. Maybe even try the other side of the bed if possible. Soon you will feel comfortable with either side.

The practice bit sounds right. I find a difference in mine. But I remember how much harder it was to transfer for a bit when I finished some renovations, and switched bedrooms. It meant a different transfer. No real reason for the difficulty, but it took practice.

By the way, you said you don;t have any trouble xferring into bed, or your car. How about getting OUT of the car. That is the opposite.

If getting out of the car is no problem, it is a practice thing. If there were a physical reason you couldn;t transfer well towards the other direction, you;d have trouble getting OUT of your car, right?

Right, I should have been more clear in my post. I can transfer back into my wc from my bed and car going to the left. I think I've become so used to transfering one way from my wc and back into it that I just accepted that as the only way I'm going to be able to do it independently. When I travel, beds are not set up like my room so instead of transfering to my left, I face the headboard and transfer to my right and when getting back into my wc I have to flip myself around and transfer to my left to get back in my wc. My problem is I can't transfer to my left getting out of my wc but I can transfer to my left to get back into my wc from my bed and car. I hope this makes more sense.

Most likely it's psychological or just not in the habit of transfering from both sides.

Getting out of bed I normally go to my right but every now and then I go to the left.
Then there's going to movies or getting off the sofa it's ALWAYS to my left, i think the height of the transfer from anything to wheelchair has something to do w/ it.

I'd say just switch it up a bit so you get better at transfering from either the left or right.

I think a lot of it is just what you get used to. I'm the same way, but my right side is weaker, so that's why I learned to transfer to the right. But then one of my tougher transfers is out of the shower off my tub transfer bench, and it's to the left using my right side to do most of the work, so I think with practice I could transfer more easily to my left.
