Phospho soda alert/recall

I have just read that last month fleet started voluntarily recalling phospho soda from pharmacies and asking doctors not to recommend the usage of phospho soda. I read this 10 minutes after taking 45 ml of the thing for colonoscopy preparation due to high risk of kidney failure.

I also read that people with slow bowel movements are at greater risk. My movements are slow plus it has been two hours since I took the 45 ml and I have yet to go the first time.

I am worried, first for what I took, and second because I am due to take another 45 ml in two hours. What should I do?

This is what I read:

Fleet Phospho-Soda which is an over the counter drug used in preparation for colonoscopies was recalled on December 11, 2008. This followed a Safety Alert issued by the Food and Drug Administration warning consumers not to use over the counter colonoscopy preparations including Fleet's due to the high risk of kidney damage. The FDA is also now requiring all prescription bowel cleansers to carry a black box warning about the risk of kidney damage. Fleet's was not a prescription drug thus black box warnings are not placed on over the counter drugs. This led to the recall of the product altogether in order to better protect the public. Fleet Phospho-Soda was manufactured by C. B. Fleet, Co. For more information go to http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2008/NEW01923.html.

I am sure this is a possibility but if uyou have had your kidney functions blood test and monitored reguary and checked regualry and continue to drink liquids and not get dehydrated you shoud be okay-maybe you should call your MD or the radiologist or postpone the test if you are concerned.

This applies to all OTCs like citrate of magnesium? That explains why my spousal unit was prescribed a bunch of pills called OsmoPrep. No black box warning and he just picked this up Saturday. How does the FDA suggest people prep for them? Starve for 5 to 7 days?

I decided to abort the test, research the issue better and reschedule. I took one bottle of 45ml and decided not to take the second one. I basically got very little reaction the first day and diarreah today.

I believe that it only applies to phospho soda products, but I believe we need the opinion of the experts here.

I would have done the same.
I wouldn't drink any more till it was safe.
I'm glad you're okay!

Basically, out of the situations that make people higher risk for kidney damage, I had three issues.

1) I was not fully hydrated. This I could correct for next time.
2) I, like many SCI, have slow moving bowels.
3) I take Ace inhibitors (sp.) for high blood pressure.

Given the facts above, should I hydrate myself well and reuse the Phospho soda given that it is much more comfortable than the gallon drink, or should I avoid the risk and take the gallon and all the discomfort that brings. What would you do? Nurse??

Your prep should be done at the direction of the physician doing your scope. If you have concerns you should contact them prior to starting the prep (which should be give to you as written instructions).

Would your doctor go for a 23 hour stay in a hospital to do the prep and watch your BP and put you on an IV drip to keep you hydrated? The doc will have to convince any insurance you have but mine has been convinced since my BP goes down into the 55/35 range without an IV even though I drink tons and use Mag Citrate. This last time I was also given an EKG.

That OsmoPrep my husband used this past time worked very well for an AB. Just a ton of pills and 64 ounces of water, apple juice, gatorade, etc., over 36 hours. Just a couple of rumbles that told him to hit the john soon. Very few trips and he slept through the night well. He's not on inhibitors but has high blood pressure and takes a med for it. He does home preps fine. I don't.
