Saw sneak previews of two films this week with the Cinema Society:
50/50 staring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, and Anna Kendrick (with a cameo by Angelica Houston) is a comedy-drama about a 27 year old man who is diagnosed with cancer, and his efforts to fight the disease and live his life. Some of this was hilarious, with lots of it poking fun at physicians. The only thing that did not ring true was his rapid and nearly complete recovery from serious spinal surgery, and his relationship with his psychologist (questionable ethics). Seth Rogen plays the usual jerk role he seems type-cast in, but turns out to be the best friend the main character really needs in his life. I recommend this one. Moneyball was a disappointment. This is Brad Pitt's new film, which apparently is the hit of the Toronto Film Festival. It is the true story of Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane's successful attempt to put together a winning (2002) baseball club on a budget by employing computer-generated analysis to draft his players. Jonah Hill was very good as the statistical geek and Robin Wright-Penn has a very small role as Beane's ex-wife. I am a baseball fan, but I still found much of this film incredibly boring and incomprehensible. Lots of shots of Pitt looking serious and trying to act like some type of visionary. A very cynical take on the National Pastime. (KLD) |

I just watched Oliver's travels. Technically not a movie I guess because it had 5 episodes like a mini series, but an interesting mystery with eccentric detectives.

I've decided I hate Clint Eastwood's directing as much as I hate his acting.
just saw 'Hereafter'. He took a good cast, with good plot points, and washed them out in too much light in the shots, too dry of pacing, just, no... Clint. retire already. zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Went to the drive-ins this week and saw Drive- thought it was super good. stylized, slick, enough Gosling for the ladies... Albert Brooks as a thug (yes, really.) suprising pop soundtrack. way better than I thought.

My Mom and I went to "Sarah's Key" yesterday. It was excellent and I would highly recommend it.
Dave and I watched "Into the Wild" on Netflix last week and also enjoyed it. I read the book several years ago. |
