Be Unveiled October 15
What do images of Miami Beach, a New York City skyline and a kiss from Elizabeth Hurley have in common? They're each about to adorn a limited edition "AOL 8.0 Designer Disk." Over the last decade, AOL disks have become as much a part of the pop-culture landscape as the phrase "You've Got Mail."(R) This special collection, to be formally unveiled on October 15th at a special AOL member celebration at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, marks the launch of AOL 8.0 and at the same time, introduces a whole new art form.
Eight different versions of the AOL 8.0 disk have been designed celebrities from the worlds of fashion, theater, sports, music, and entertainment and reproduced in a limited edition of 1,000 each. Tom Cruise, Enrique Iglesias, Donna Karan, Magic Johnson, Matthew Broderick, Kate Spade, Elizabeth Hurley and a combined disk by Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore in anticipation of their upcoming film "The Hours", have all signed on to bring their own personal style directly to your mailbox.
Beginning October 15th, the original, signed artwork from each of these superstar designers will be auctioned on eBay to benefit their chosen charity. This special limited edition collection will also be featured online at AOL Keyword: Designer Disk so fans can check out their favorite celebrities' artwork and learn more about the causes they care about. In addition, 1,000 of each collectible AOL 8.0 Designer Disk will be distributed free at Bloomingdale's in New York City to mark the launch of AOL 8.0. In January 2003, a second limited edition run of these Designer Disks will be mailed to homes across the country as part of AOL's ongoing direct mail program.
"We are proud to have legends such as these lend their names to our special AOL 8.0 Designer Disk collection," said Jon Miller, Chairman and CEO of America Online. "AOL 8.0 represents the centerpiece of an all-new experience offering new features that enhance AOL's hallmarks of convenience and ease of use and take the online experience to a new level. These Designer Disks add an element of celebrity and excitement to our offerings -- not to mention charity."
8 Designs from Icons of Popular Culture
To recognize the diversity of the AOL service and the cult status of these collectibles, celebrities who best represent their respective fields were selected to create AOL disk designs.
-- Tom Cruise - As one of the world's biggest superstars, Tom Cruise often plays
the hero not only on screen, but in real life as well. It should be no surprise that this superman chose the charity "H.E.L.P." to benefit from the sale of his disk.
The Hollywood Education & Literacy Project (H.E.L.P.) is a community based literacy and mentoring project, offering free one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for students, as well as instruction, training and internships for volunteer tutors and those opening community centers in other areas. To date, H.E.L.P. has opened more than 25 projects in the U.S. and abroad, assisting thousands in literacy and life skills.
-- Elizabeth Hurley - Each of Elizabeth Hurley's three lives - as actor,
producer, and model for Estee Lauder cosmetics and perfumes - have made her one of the most recognized figures in the world of film and fashion. Ms. Hurley leaves them wanting more by donating a kiss on her scented disk to help raise money for a charity close to her heart, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is the first and largest national organization dedicated solely to funding clinical and genetic research on breast cancer. Since its inception in 1993, $40 million in grants has been raised to support premier investigators at major medical facilities nationwide. A minimum of 85% of all funds raised goes directly to breast cancer research and awareness programs. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation's mission is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime.
-- Enrique Iglesias - As one of the biggest-selling Latin artists in the world,
Enrique sold more than ten million copies of his first two albums in just three years. In addition to being a Grammy(R) winner, Enrique was also declared one of the sexiest men alive by People Magazine in 1998. Here Enrique shares his seductive vision of Miami Beach for The United Foundation for AIDS's KIDZCare.
The United Foundation for AIDS's KIDZCare supports children and adolescents infected and affected by HIV & AIDS, and their families, by raising urgently needed funding for prevention, education, social services, emergency assistance, rental assistance, emotional and spiritual support, and clothing and utility assistance. KIDZCare is committed to furthering awareness regarding the growing infection rate in Miami Dade County and nationally, through the creation of partnerships and alliances with other community-based organizations and associations.
-- Earvin "Magic" Johnson - One of America's greatest sports legends and
philanthropists, Magic led the Lakers to five NBA Championships in 1980, 1982, 1985 and back-to-back World Championships in 1987 and 1988. Here he takes a shot at helping children with his "head for basketball" design to support his own Magic Johnson Foundation.
The Magic Johnson Foundation is committed to helping nonprofit organizations by awarding grants and helping them gain exposure for their causes. The Foundation is committed to America's youth and believes that as long as children are given the tools needed to succeed, they can have a positive future. In addition, the Foundation hopes to have a positive impact on the lives of all Americans through its efforts to raise awareness, and thus prevention, of serious health conditions.
-- Donna Karan - Donna Karan's clothing designs and popular line of fragrances,
shoes and intimate apparel have made her brand one of the most recognized in the world of fashion. This world-renowned fashion designer says New York City "sets the pace, the attitude" for her creations. Proceeds from her first-class design featuring the city she loves will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
-- Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep - Three legendary actresses,
Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore, teamed up for their upcoming film, "The Hours," and for a great cause. Their floral design, inspired by "The Hours," will help raise money for the Children's Defense Fund.
The mission of the Children's Defense Fund is to Leave No Child Behind(R) and to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. CDF provides a strong, effective voice for all the children of America who cannot vote, lobby, or speak for themselves, paying particular attention to the needs of poor and minority children and those with disabilities.
-- Kate Spade - In 1993 Kate Spade reinvented the handbag, propelling her and
her company to the top of the A-list in accessories design. Created to help raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the Kate Spade AOL disk reflects her bold use of color and uniquely sophisticated sensibility.
-- Matthew Broderick - Whether he is playing Ferris Bueller or Leo Bloom in the
Broadway hit, "The Producers," this Emmy and Tony-Nominated stage and screen star is loved the world over for his quick wit and boyish charm. It's clear this father-to-be is artistically talented as well. Matthew Broderick's design is benefiting Project A.L.S.
Project A.L.S. was founded by Jenifer Estess, who was diagnosed with the disease in 1997, along with her family and friends. Project A.L.S. raises funds for A.L.S. research in order to bring the best basic science to people living with A.L.S. (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease), in the hopes of finding effective treatments and a cure. If successful, neural stem cell replacement will make a difference to those living with a range of neurologic disorders, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, stroke, multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury.
