Spinal cord injury

Spinal cord injury
By Mark Johnson of the Journal Sentinel

Posted: Dec. 13, 2008

About the condition: Spinal cord injuries have many causes, including trauma from vehicle crashes and gunshot wounds, as well as tumors and strokes. In general, an injury harms the movement of sensation and motor signals to the brain and results in the loss of motor neurons.

How stem cells can help: Stem cell scientists are pursuing two major approaches to spinal cord injuries: cellular replacement and "the nursing strategy," says Hans Keirstead, an associate professor of anatomy and neurobiology at Reeve-Irvine Research Center in California.

The cellular replacement approach would use embryonic stem cells or mature cells reprogrammed to an embryonic state to replace lost cells. Key candidates would be axons (essentially the wires connecting the brain to the spinal cord) or oligodendrocytes (cells that make the insulation for the wires and prevent them from short-circuiting).

The nursing strategy would involve transplantation of a young population of cells. Scientists would insert young progenitor cells into patients. Progenitors are in between stem cells and fully mature cells. The idea of inserting progenitors would not be to have them replace lost cells, but rather to send them into the body to secrete growth factors that can nurse injured cells. The aim would be to halt a severe decline in the function of the spinal cord. For this approach to work, patients would have to be treated within weeks of the injury.

Hi Dr. Young, happy holidays to you and your lovely family. Are you going back to China soon? I always want to ask you, do you communicate with the doctors there in chinese language? If you do, it must be much easier when you speak their language right? I think is great!

thank you, manouli.
