I used to hate hills on the handcycle. Slow and steady is what works for me. I'm not as fast as Arndog up the hills.... but I generally make it to the top one revolution at a time.

Just back from a 3-day benefit ride for our local adaptive sports program. The ride is geared around AB cyclists and adaptive cyclists are unlikely to finish all sections. I did about 105 miles with 55 coming the first day. About 34 the next day with lots of climbing... miles of climbing. Today was a short day with about 16 miles, some good steep climbs and some heavy downpours. Soaking wet when we finished.

Ran into basketball legend Bill Walton in the middle of nowhere. He is an avid cyclist.

We raised over $30k for the adaptive program.

Pic of me and another guy waiting for the group to regather near the end of the ride.

Backup with camping gear, as in sleeping pads, tent, that kind of stuff? We have some, but a lot is car camping sized. There is a well known sporting goods store in Bishop that rents back country camping equipment. I think the prices are reasonable. http://eastsidesports.com/eastside/node/9

Planning for an overnight probably makes the most sense. Even if you tried to do it in a day, you need to be prepared to be there overnight.... as I know you are full aware.
I have TONS of gear - I'm a gear junkie, I have a "gear wall" - If it looks like weather will cooperate on the long scale forcast we can start a gear list.
I would rather rack out then have to bail.....
But, seeing 4-wheel Bob makes me wonder if we could kick it out in a day - could we get a "pass" to start at the farthest gate? It never hurts to ask.......Looks like a 2000ft climb?
I know that a oneoff is faster then a daily off road.
The sunset/sunrise would be to die for.

I got in three hours of singletrack onthe oneoff - 2.5 hours of non-stop climbing, and .5 hour of just awesome burmed down hill.
Arm pump at the top -

I tried out fore arm crutches at therapy today and liked them. I was much faster at getting around and felt very stable. Still not sure how well they would do on sand but I will give it a try. I ordered some online. Couldn't afford the Sidestix. I bought a pair called Smartcrutch. Looked good and had all the requisite testimonials. Thanks for the advice on the crutches.

I have stopped my PT because I really can't afford it and I am really doing everything I need at home. Plus, I was at a standard rehab place and they really don't know much about SCI. I had to do my own research and all that anyway. I don't need to pay that much to get a good work out.

I went surfing one night this week and have been riding the trike most every night. Since I am spending more and more time on my feet, I am laying off the resistance stuff some. Focusing more on muscles that are weak mostly like my left hamstrings and abductors and doing squats and other more strenuous legs stuff only a couple days a week.

MFloun - Maybe get some sidestep sand baskets (4 inch diameter) and figure out how to marry them to you new crutches - there must be a way depending on the inner diameter of each tubing.
Just an idea...

2 days ago - hand cycled another 4800 ft workout - 4.25 hr. Will do it again tomorrow am.

Garro - I put in a call about borrowing a one off. I am considering going down next week to White Mountain and scope it out - check out the oldest trees on planet earth (ancient bristlecones) and camp at the trailhead. Maybe crutch walk up there. That would be a big day - If I could average 1.5 mph - that is under 10 hours of effort. Doable in a day.
Will keep you posted. What do you think your speed is going up a road like 'ol Bob did on a one off at 13k ft. And what do you think your speed would be coming down? Or should I ask what your average speed would be. Will the Mrs. come up on her MTN bike with a trailer with an ice chest and beer and soda? ;-)

Great open water swim this morning at 6 am at the Boulder Reservoir. Water was about 75 degrees, air was about 60. It was beautiful and calm surrounded by the foothills.

Thanks to the Boulder Aquatic Masters team, I not only got some help into and out of the water, but also got coaching from two impressive open water swimmers. I felt so calm and happy afterwards; open water swimming is very different from racing. Relaxing and slowing down seemed to be the keys to doing well.

Right On.
You should borrow one quickly if you think you may use it - they take getting used to.
ALSO: how about SEPTEMBER?
I think we have changed our minds & will be coming earlier to beat the weather - I really want to do this and the Mrs. got some extra days off........I can go whenever as long as I get my work done.....I'll shoot you the dates ASAP.
Yep - she will bring the mountain bike & trailer.
Speed going up on a "road" - I'd hope for a good 2mph.
Going down? If it's steep enough up to 30mph I reckon. I've hit 40 on pavement with the car following.
PS - I have wanted to see the Methusela grove since I was in the single digits - trees that were old when they built the pyramids.......
