In rehab I was told the verts above and below injury take on alot more work and that I can expect trouble from them in the future. Is this something any long term SCI people have seen happen?

I'm fused from approx T10-L1, and I have the most pain just above the fusion. Looks fine in X-rays, MRI, etc - but about once or twice a year I get wicked muscle spasms there. Since all of my back muscles still function, I have a physical therapist designed fitness routine to help strengthen where I need it (she's an athletic trainer, too). We change this up as needed.

Arndog, yes I have ROM below L5 but maybe half of what was normal. I'm not sure if that's due to fusion, though. When the tree fell on me, I was folded up in a lawn chair in a compressed Z position. I honestly felt that my knees and hips must have been blown at the time but nothing was broken. However, comeback from that has been tremendously slow. I'm still super tight in the psoas area and should be stretching everyday but I'm bored with it.

I suspect we're all a little jealous of Steve and it's not just his adventures. He's just got a certain unstoppable zest for life. I wish him a fabulous trip and hope he tells all once he's back. I'm sure he will!

This has always been a concern for me too. The surgeons also told me this too in 1989. The fusion was also said to be stronger or as strong as the original bone.

At 23 years last week, my spine above and below the fusion appears to be stable and in great shape other than looking like a train wreck (doctor's words) LOL

Hey Arndog
Yes I have ROM at L4 just below my 6 vertebra fusion. Was surprised that I could move so well, after surgery. Figured with 6 vertebra fused, that I would be very stiff. Like most builders, I wore out my L5, so hopefully L4 will hang in there for a while. How are you doing with your ROM, being fused down to the bottom?

Thinking about what you said about camping out. The first thing that came to my mind was the hole B and B issue. Glad that you have found a way to deal with it. I know that it's parable not ease.

And yes I'm glad Steve is having a fun time, singing row row your boat gently down the stream. Until the big water comes along, then maybe theres an o shit in there some where.

Truly as for feeling stronger emotion after SCI, I think thats very true. Unfortunately, I think it works both ways, good and bad. But fortunately, we have a very positive group going here, so it's mostly joy, that is enhanced. I've been enjoying all the wonderful flowers, that my wife has keep going, around my house. And my wife as well. Its an unbelievably wonderful feeling, to be loved full time. I'm sure that some of you, who are better at the written word can say it better, but I think you all get the idea. Another beautifully day in Paradise.

I'll take that as good news.
Thanks

Mine was a massive disc herniation/sequestration at L5/S1 and cauda equina syndrome this level and below + some involvement of the right L4 nerves. After 6 weeks of friggin around with misdiagnosis I eventually had a microdiscectomy which relieved a lot of the pain, but regained nothing in muscle function or sensation. The surgeon said he had removed virtually all the disc and everything would be fine.

So 5 years on I finally went and had another MRI (being in the team for paralympics our national sporting organisations doctors were not convinced all was OK). Finally admit that things have been gettting worse and now they (neurosurgeon and sports doc) tell me I need anterior fusion of L5/S1 and disc replacement at L4/L5. Seems that the L5 has slipped over the S1 and, with foraminal arthritis and no disc, that is compressing the L5 nerve roots on the good side. Disc above has ruptured and is compressing the L4 nerve roots (with same problems of foraminal arthritis). Main problem for me now is walking and standing upright. Funny thing is I feel great when flexed position on the bike

Pretty minor compared to most of your problems but a bit reluctant to go down the surgery road. Apparently its all not that uncommon..... if your over 70! Its hard to find a straight answer on what the likelyhood is of further functional loss though - no one seems willing to say how much I might or might not lose if I just leave it alone. Pain is manageable and is not the main issue for me.

Sorry for the ramble, just feeling a bit confused at the moment. Main aim is to stay as fit and healthy as possible till London in September, then worry about if or when I have surgery after that.

Woot! I brought my new bike home today! I actually bought it yesterday but just when the guys at the shop were getting ready to help me with the bike rack, we had a deluge. It's an Electra Townie flat foot bike. Very retro looking. In fact, so retro that it's uber-cool. (wish my retro self would be so cool...)

After a day of work and then the bike shop excursion and a trip home through road construction, about all I had energy for was getting the bike off the rack. Managed that fine but, as usual, had to do trial and error and adapt the whole process. The rack, itself, was a challenge because I didn't know where the ratchet set was, so Spouse had to help me with that part.

I can't wait to give it a try but am a bit nervous, too. Nothing is the same after SCI. So, will it be true that you never forget how to ride a bike? I guess we'll see. Stay tuned!

Live2Ride, I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles. I hope you get all the information you need in order to make the best decision...and live2ride far into the future.

L2R - good to hear from you. Don't make any changes before London. How exciting to participate in the ParaOlympics. I am hoping that a friend of mine from Reno will go their as a hand cyclist. Touch wood (or knock on wood) that he makes it.

Truly - That electric townie sounds cool. You are retro cool, well maybe just retro... ;-)

Flying - what a great post there at the end. I hear you, 'bro. There is good, there is bad. There is more of both on this our side of SCI injuries. Take the good and try to rejoice. (Hard for me to do after 5 pm as the neuropathic pain hits with a vengeance).
ROM - My only ROM comes from hamstring flexibility. I definitely get frustratrated by my loss of ROM. I can not easily pick up something off the ground as I have been fused in good upright extension posture. But I have a hell of a good posture at the dinner table. Never slump cause I can't !
Glad you have one segment below your fusion that helps with ROM.

CJT8 - I trashed my 2 segments (L4-S1) after my initial L2 burst fracture from mono skiing and general overdoing crutch walking necessitating 2 major revision surgeries leading to my stable but totally fused situation.

Hey Arndog or anybody else. I overworked my shoulders last weekend, and now have tendinitis like symptoms, in the tendon that pulls ones shoulder forward. Am just trying to rest it, by not walking or hand cycling. No fun at all. What else can I do? Any ideas, from the more experienced people. What a wake up call.
Man Arndog, sorry to here that your so stiff. How is the next vertebra up is doing?

truly, congrats on the new bike! Sounds like you've got some fun ahead of you.

I've been participating in a track program for the last couple of years. This year our coach quit, and there was a scramble to find a new coach. Last night we had our first workout with the new coach, starting about 2 months late, but no worries, I've been out training (some) on my own.

Last year we were 2 Paralympians, me and another one or two intermediate type racers, and a varying group of little kids (love seeing little kids get out on the track!).

This year we seem to be minus the Paralympians, and plus two twenty something guys who have not raced before. This left me as the fastest racer in the workout which was interesting. The coach spent most of his time getting the two new guys fitted in chairs and started, and I got to be the stroke and positioning model (the new coach is able-bodied, so didn't do the demoing himself). I'm sure the new guys will leave me in the dust shortly.

I got about about 8800 yards before the rain and wind hit, so I'll call that a good practice. The Bolder Boulder 10K is coming up in a week and a half!
