There is going to be a large international conference in Dublin next April:
Human Pluripotent Stem Cells symposium: interrogating disease and development April 22-24 2009, Dublin, Ireland http://www.abcam.com/index.html?page...urce&rid=11610 At the moment it is hoped that there will be a special event for patients' organizations and clinicians to get together to discuss the optimum routes for cure research as well as the unfortunate bogus treatments currently on offer. |

Dr. Young, it should be mentioned in 2008 a team of researchers led by Juan Carlos Izpisúa Belmonte at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, succeeded in generating iPS cells from the tiny number of keratinocytes attached to a single hair plucked from a human scalp.
They've boosted the reprogramming efficiency more than 100-fold, while cutting the time it takes in half. This is a much quicker, easier and more efficient means of getting iPS cells than anything else I've read about. All you have to do is pluck one hair, can't get a whole lot easier. Or do you know of an even better method? Thanks for the information! |

It is important to emphasize, however, that we must not shut the door on embryonic stem cell research. A lot of work still must be done to establish what IPS cells can and cannot do. We still have very little understanding of what the four genes are doing to transform a somatic cell into an IPS cell. Finally, we need to understand what how a stem cell does what it does. We cannot achieve this understanding without studying the real McCoy, the embryonic stem cell. Wise. |

Dr. Wise. If you want to go bold, do so.
