I've never done one of these but I understand they're one of the easier ways to raise a nice sum. Your profile says you like movies. Is there a movie house near you that has special nights when they show classics or get a preview night ahead of other theaters for first runs?

Decide who the money will go to so the people who buy the tickets can claim the portion of the money above the normal ticket price as a tax deduction. There are people who will help you out on this at most charities like, say, the SCI Project. :-) Then you and the theater get together and advertize a gala grand opening or a night of classic horror movies or whatever and charge extra for the first ten rows or the entire theater. The charitable take is all the money above the normal ticket price and minus advertising (but you may be able to get free ads in newspapers too).

Or drag some people out of the student union and arrange a car wash. Church groups also do this stuff. Right before New Year's is a good time too. I don't know if this still goes on but when I was going to college the student union was taken over for an hour every Wednesday during the lunch hour by a 25 cent a beer thing for the Veterans Club. Probably have to charge a buck now.

Good luck, Matt. It's nice to see others wanting to give it a try. And ask all the questions you want. Steven will surely come up with answers (not sure they will be totally correct but....)
