BirdeR,
Is this true, that the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation is one of the 12 charities that Worth magazine advises people to steer clear of? What reason did they give? I am sorry but I haven't been able to get a hold of the article. Wise. |

Name Similarities
Birdie,
Thank you for the list. It is important to look at the % of money going to administrative support...generally anything GREATER than 25% administrative is NOT a charity you want to support. Please not that most of the organizations listed to NOT support are VERY close in name to Reputable organizations. The MS Foundation is outstanding but the American MS Association is on the list of 12 to avoid.Shady companies look for name similarity and recogognition and then prey on well meaning people. In the end, those who need the funds as well as those who donate loose. Choose carefully and ask for the current audit which is available upon request..then you know that your money is being wisely used. I was happy to see an organization that has assisted our family during my recent injury listed..The YMCA. They have stepped forward and provided a tremendous amount of scholarship support for my youngests sons childcare. I am physically unable to take care of him butthe Department of Social Services says that I am home and he should be too. The YMCA stepped up to the plate and has helped and worked to keep a challenging developmentally disabled child in their care!!! Quodos to the YMCA as well as the other outstanding non-profits.

We really should start a list of all the charitable organizations that fund spinal cord injury research. Would anybody care to do so? It would be good to get comments and also see how many of these organizations have goals and missions that people in this community favor.

I Will Do It
Dr Young,
I would be willing to do the research, obtain mission statements and to try to get copies of where their money goes! If others on the site know of organizations, please pass them along. Sue, Do you have the list of federally approved charities? |

You mean the one from the Combined Federal Campaign? If so, I can get one. May take a few days. The CFC publishes a book each year with all the registered charities that wish to participate. The main default chairty is the United Way. The charities are checked out as to being legally to par with IRS regulations and those who use more than 25%, I think, for administrative costs are marked to let people know where their money goes.
Most federal employees and military members do give to the CFC. It is in the best interest of all charities to be in that book and have a number well advertised during the Fall campaign season. Employees can give over the course of a year in each pay check or in one lump sum. And no, there is no coercion that goes on trying to pry open federal employees' wallets. The CFC is voluntary. :-) Sue |
