fund-raising for medically indigent
Steven and Wise - Will this forum address individual fundraising issues, e.g. A person doesn't have the funds to purchase a van or needs a new wheelchair and no insurance to pay for it, etc.? In my work as a Resource Center Staff Member for NSCIA, I am aware that this is an area of tremendous need. This may be a good place for generating creative ways and means to help the many persons who are without sufficient financial resources for vital durable medical equipment and needed services. crf

crf,
You can post ideas for fundraisers for those in need; that should not be a problem. It would probably be best to take the wait-and-see approach to see how it works out, so feel free to go ahead and start out a thread on the topic. Good luck! ![]() -Steven |

crf, I agree with Steven that this forum should and could be used for individual fundraising as well as research, etc. Should I change the description at the front?
Actually, Steven, as a moderator, you should be able to change it... If you can't let me know. Wise. |

Do others donate their used chairs to rehab hospitals? I did with my last power chair and plan to with my manual chair when the new one arrives. I ask that they be given to medicaid eligables who will have to wait 8-12 months for their own chairs to be approved. Then they are supposed to go back to the rehab hospital. I haven't checked to see if this happened or not.
I also gave my adaptive tools to a friend who could use them or knew others, through her work, that could once I no longer needed them. I'm well covered so I figure I should just pass the stuff in decent shape on. CRF...is there a better way to do this? |

Easter Seals is a good source for used equipment such as wheelchairs, shower chairs, and other items. It is my understanding that they also offer Physical therapy and classes, though I have not utilized this service and do not know much about it, but it may be worth a call in your community.

donating used equipment
dtx - sorry to be so long in responding to your question about used equipment. I think it is such a great idea that you have been trying to find a way to help others. I know from my work at NSCIA what a tremendous need there is for chairs and other DME's.
Some other thoughts would be to list the items you have with a local independent living center (ILC) (local office of information and referral for persons with disabilities), support group or NSCIA chapter if there is one in your area. To find an ILC near you go to: Email: ilru@ilru.org or 800-520-8641 Other possibilities: your state office of assistive technology, www.wheelchairjunkie.com and www.wheelchairnet.org Both of these latter site are interesting and may have some other suggestions to offer. Lastly, the Elks Organization primary charity effort is in the area of disabilities. You might contact your local Elks Club to learn if they have a means of connecting the needy with a resource.
