SCI-Nurse - Turn-Q mattress, down time

My sores turned out to be worse than we thought, so I'm going to be down for a while, where I can't do anything. I'm scared, but I'll be okay. Question about InvareTurn-Q mattress - prices vary so much. Are they all the same?

Hi Alan,

You can't seem to catch a break. I hope you won't be down for too long but make sure you get those damn sores closed so they don't get infected. If it's not one thing it's another, eh?

I hope you have enough help around the house, for both you and your Mom.

You'll still have access to the forums here won'tcha?

Bob.

No. I can't type in bed because of my back pain and scapula problems. I also have no laptop, and very little computer knowledge. I don't know Windows - I use an old OS, and barely know how to use that.

Ca you ie on your stomach?
There are different turning mattresses. However to get maximum benefit with these turning mattresses -you still need to turn where you don't constantly lay with all your skin i ncontact with the mattress.

I can't lay on my stomach. Because of the pains, I have the feeling that my chest and abdomen are as hard as concrete and compressed by a huge weight, so it feels like breathing is nearly impossible. On my stomach, I panic.

My whole body feels like that, along with all the other central pain sensations that always get worse.

I'm so depressed. I'm terrified. And the pains and everything keep me from sleeping.

I don't have anyone to turn me. They're bad. 3. I don't know how this happened.

A low-air-loss (LAL) turning mattress may be some help, but none completely unweight the spine or sacrum, so are better than a regular mattress, but not as pressure reducing as a air fluidized (Clinitron). The LAL turning mattresses (Invacare Turn-Q, Triline TurnCair Plus, etc.) can be put onto any hospital bed frame though (side rails are needed for safety), while a Clinitron is a full bed and would have to replace your bed. It is also very heavy, and uses a lot of electricity and generates a lot of heat. There are specific models for home use. Rarely will insurance pay for a Clinitron unless you have had a flap, and if your wounds are on your spine, the Rite Hite (the only model that has an elevating head of bed section) would not be right for you. Most turning LAL mattresses turn only 20-30 degrees, although the TurnCair Plus will go to 40 degrees.

Keep in mind that turning is not important just for your skin, but also for your lungs, bowels, and urinary system.

Impossible to tell without much more information such as exact size and location, stage, surface, tracking or undermining, any underlying osteomyelitis, your nutrition, positioning, etc. etc. Weeks to months are the minimum.
