Preventing Caregiver Burnout

Teaching caregivers of stroke survivors how to effectively resolve problems significantly improves their mental health and overall well-being, according to a study by Joan Grant, D.S.N., professor of nursing at UAB. "The finding has important implications for caregivers and stroke survivors. If a caregiver is depressed it's likely the stroke survivor is also depressed, which puts the survivor at greater risk of having another stroke." Details of the study are published in the August issue of the journal Stroke. "It's imperative that we find cost-effective ways to help caregivers improve their quality of life so they can continue to provide quality care for stroke survivors at home. Caregiver burnout is a major reason stroke survivors are institutionalized."
