I'm like Herco, use an X5 only when going offroading(I'm a T10) but it will enter a house just fine. Watch out, it will bunch up carpets in a hurry.

The 4x4 Extreme is NOT house friendly. It steers by turning the front wheels, and the turning radius is very large.

My X5 has taken me places I shouldn't have gone, , waay steeper than the specs for it, and thru mud(don't go inside for awhile ), over 4" logs, etc. As you can tell, I highly recommned it.

edit: here's a thread with good discuss and pics:

getting around off the beaten path

I used to use the old Honda 185 3 wheeled atc just like you want to do. A pc is easier to transport but the 3,now 4 wheelers are kick ass. I agree the 6 wheels can get high centered easily.

Having had both front wheel drive and rear wheel drive chairs which I drive alone through the National Forest, I much prefer front wheel drive. Leading with small tires mounted to a swivel causes the chair to shift to the right or left when hitting obstructions and can cause the driver to loose control. Especially when you need speed to conquer the obstruction

Attacking rough terrain with large, front, knobby tread tires allows the individual to climb, break through and steer straight regardless of the obstacle. Granted my power chair is heavy but many times I have climbed up on tree limb blockages so that I can break them in pieces and then, bust my way through.

Like the Capn said, having tilt allows the driver to tackle much steeper hills than you would believe.
Having a heavy chair also enables me to tow extremely heavy blockages as long as I can attach the chair to it. Rated to 1/2 a ton.

iBOT

I have used front, mid and rear wheeled chairs. Simply put they get stuck in rough terrain. I also live in the country and am very active outside. This was one of my biggest problems. Hit a mole hole with one of your drive wheels and your done. Sand and loose gravel also does in any 2 wheelers.

Correct me if I'm wrong but their are really only 2 true four wheeled chairs manufactured. The extreme 4x4 and the iBOT. The extreme 4x4 has a turning radus of 53" - no way could I use that inside.

I really suggest you demo these before you decide. You can schedule a test drive of an iBOT from their web site. If you are a veteran go to my website for info on the VA process of getting one.

Good luck,
Tracy

Jesus, I just watched the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJcGw31gPu0 in the other thread. I want an X5. Much as I like the city my friends are often out in the hills and lakes and I miss it. I'd buy one just to widen my horizons.

Plus, I want to do that cool 360 he pulls at 2:03.........

LOL! The chair is blast! I love my x5. Drew really pushes his to the limit!

Even around the city, you would benefit from its low air wheels. Those wheels would eat up the vibrations of a cobblestone street!

i agree, i finally got to try one at the 'all terrain wheelchairs' stand at the mobility roadshow in coventry last month, and i took it outside for a runaround. i was unconsiously slowing down to go over the concrete lip around a manhole, until it dawned on me my brother and the dealer were staring at me like i was mental, so i started crashing over it at top speed - and felt no difference. i love the chair, but cant afford the sterling price. im vaguely considering putting it in a queue for me to buy in the states... maybe planet mobility. i need a fairly frankensteined pediatric rehab seat though...
