I had a hell of a time with 'pop-ups' from 'antivirus2008XP' malware. Finally got rid of this thing by downloading from www.spyzooka.com which deleted it immediately as well as several other types of spyware/trojans, etc atv $30.

Thanks terence

Thanks terence,

I've heard of it but haven't checked it out yet. I'm going to try this on my spare PC sometime (unless I forget). It says you can scan for free, does it get rid of it for free, at least the 1st time?

Malware, Spyware issues

After running Spybot find and download Ad Aware its on download.com. Look for the newest version for Ad Aware (not AdWare, bad utility program) . I've been using this shareware for over 5 yrs. and never had any issues and I've never had to reformat any hdrive. If virus related run Spider. I'm not sure if this is still listed at download.com. It will rid you of any viruses McAfee/Norton/Panda or any other virus cleaning programs. First get rid of those cookies that are possibly still in temporary files.

It basically wants to trick you into buying it, to rid your computer of everything it "found". Well this afternoon she brought me the laptop, because this kept popping up every few minutes. She has virus protection running, and 2 or 3 different spyware programs, I think this snuck in b/c it tricked her into allowing it. While removing it I found 3 others on there. AntiMalware was another of them, I don;t remember the other two (they were removed before I really knew they were there, LOL, I just noticed a couple of programs gone ....)

I have had to run several different spyware programs to get rig of everything.

So ..... watch out for "fake" virus protection pop ups!

Thanks all. I did end up reformatting. I managed to get it almost back, but there was plenty of stuff on there we didn;t need anyway, so it seemed like the way to go.

I like Ad aware myself. I usually run it and Spybot. Between the two they seem to catch everything. Except that you need to remember to run them. And AVG free. She hasn;t had any problems since we fixed it.

From another post I did:

However, I'd run CCleaner and also use it's Registry cleaner, I unchecked _Unused File Extensions and _Fonts. Another way to keep your computer less cluttered is to download and run Revo Uninstaller, it does a much better job of removing programs. I also use it's _Tools _AutoRuns Manager feature (this maybe another cause of a slower PC).

Only problem with the new free AVG 8.0 is that it does not do any email protection after 30 days anymore. I am currently using Avast free, however it gives me a lot of false positives and can be anoying at times. The best free ones right now apparently (changes sometimes every 6-12 months) is Avira AntiVir 8.
SuperAntiSpyware is great, however the free version does not do real time proteciton, but can run it once a week, I would download and run this one right away! If you want a free one that does realtime protection then Spyware Terminator is pretty good.

Again ram is cheap if it's DDR2 and you can have 4gb with a 32bit OS. Even though it says 3.2gb available, the other 800mb are being used by Windows and cannot be used by any other programs.

I would download ZoneAlarm free (using Pro, but can't be much differnet) for a firewall, the Program options in it are really easy (use ? marks or Check marks or X's) However the best one is Comodo Firewall Pro (free) but it's really intrusive (with Defense+ enabled) and advanced. If you get a trojan or have software that wants to connect home, you'll know about it and can have it block it or allow it each time (google program name), or set it up to remember your choice and stop nagging you.

If anyone has a question if what they downloaded is a virus, trojan, etc. and/or your questioning your anti-virus then check out this site http://www.virustotal.com/17517517572137 If you know how to check out a MD5 hash then I'd use that, chances are the files already been uploaded. It uses over 30 Anti-Virus programs with updates daily and scanes it. Basically if Kaspersky or Nod32 show it's OK then your fine, even if other ones say it is a virus.
------
I would add that Avast 4.8 Free is really good for most people, it has many settings you can customize.

If I had money I would get Kaspersky or Nod32, no question about it. Let's just say the false positives are getting annoying because (somehow ) I dnld things I shouldn't.

However one of the best (now anyway) is Avira AntVir. However the Free version only does SMTP I think right now, not POP3 so this may not work for you. I always dnld to hard drive and then scan individually anyway.
