Thumbs up UK MPs back hybrid embyro research

Quote:
The government has survived two big challenges to its controversial plans to change the law on embryo research for the first time in 20 years.

A cross-party attempt to ban hybrid human animal embryos was defeated on a free vote, by 336 to 176.

Great news! Let's hope it gets to law without any amendments.

It sounds like some group was pushing for a law to bad hybrid stem cell research, and that the amendment was shot down. I'm not sure exactly what this means in the UK but hybrid research is definitely a good thing.

Who would object to this in the first place? Placing human dna into an animal's embryo cell seems like a perfect way to generate stem cells for human use. I don't know much about this subject. (For example, will the human body reject stem cells generated this way, or will they "look like" ordinary cells because their dna is the same?) Perhaps that's what the research is needed for.

Zero, it is an inexpensive way to inject human dna into animal cells for experimenting with stem cells, how to get therapies into cells using benign viruses and the like.

Senator Brownback introduced a bill recently with John McCain as a co-sponsor that would ban hybrid cell therapies and research. Currently it appears no American doctor has taken chimera cells past 14 days.
