new cushion without mapping?
I am thinking that I am in need of a new cushion. I have been using Jay extremes for the last 9 1/2 years, but my butt is completely gone now. I also have new insurance, and I can't find anywhere local that can do pressure mapping that is "In Network". My question is - what are the chances of a Roho being worse than what I am using now? Would it be smart to switch?

All I can tell you is that for my butt, the Roho high profile quadtro select is much better than the Jay cushions I've used in the past.
http://www.roho.com/medical/quadtro.jsp My butt is skinny too. And with this cushion I still have to slide my butt forward so I'm not sitting directly on the bones. I'm more on my tail bone at the moment. |

I switched from a Jay to a high profile Roho 15 yrs ago and it's the best.
I hated my Jay cushion. Oh Dave I can't stand to sit on my tail bone! Doesn't that hurt? I have no meat on my bottom & I do the opposite. I get as far back in the chair as possible. My aide pushes my knees back hard as I go down in the lift. My top falls over pushing my bottom way back in the chair. |

I have a roho, and was just mapped yesterday on it, with excellent results, but everyone is different. I would be leary of switching cushions w.o it.
Definately be sure you have someone show you how to use the roho properly, and to check that there is the right amount of air in it. When mine is "just right" it actually looks like it has lost a lot of air.

The vendor who actually sold me the cushion had the mapping equipment. There was no conflict of interest that I could see, as he was going to sell me a cushion anyway, and he wanted to sell the one that best served my needs. I am not sure it even went to insurance. Just part of the cushion price.

i had used sunmate foam for 25 years, its similar to a jay cushion but lighter.
i had pressure sores on and off for the past 10 years. i went to a wound care specialist 10/05 with a type 2 sore on my left arse over the bone. they told me get a roho as did alot of other doctors over the years. i explained i needed the foam for the reason of cutting a 2 inch deep hole under the perenium as to not pinch of my uretha. anyway i got the roho and tied down some of the cells in that area and everything is working fine. no PS since then. BTW roho will custom delete cells, i didn't know that at the time.

Can you explain how this is done?
Do you have to get out of your chair to do it? My DME says he sells all kinds of cushions & the roho is the best. He also said pressure mapping didn't help. It's not dependable. Changes according to something @ time you do it. Can't remember what. I think positioning. |

Mona, I think your DME is selling you some bull. To get pressure mapped you have to get out of your chair so that they can put a thin mat filled with tiny sensors on your cushion. You get back on chair and sit on cushion w mat. They get a reading on their laptop of where you are recording the highest pressures (putting the most pressure) on your butt. From my experience, this often coincides with where you are developing skin problems. They can try you on various cushions with the mat to see on which you test best. I believe its important that a skilled Physical therapist do the mapping. I wernt to U of M Wheelchair Seating Clinic. In other words mine was not done by DME.
