Urology appointment was today....awkward!

Had my urodynamics done today! It's my 2nd one in 18 years. They made me pee on a commode looking thing to measure my bladder capacity. It was 776, which is a lot I guess. Transferred to a table where they cathed me and I had a little less than 50 cc left in my bladder after I pee'd on the commode thing. She said that's about normal. Next they moved me to a different room and measured my bladder pressures by filling my bladder back to capacity and having me pee again. This machine looked kinda like the death chamber. It was an X-ray machine/toilet/thing. Pretty wild. All was well with that, although awkward. Then we did the ultra sound and talked with the doc again. Everything was good considering my injury level except my right kidney is somewhat larger than the left. Left kidney measured a 10 and the right was a 13. Anyone else have that difference in kidney sizes? Is there anything I need to do or not do?

My Uro. doctor told me last year after my ultra sound that my right kidney was a little smaller than my left, but it was nothing to worry about.

The normal kidney size of an adult human is about 10 to 13 cm (4 to 5 inches) long and about 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inches) wide. It is approximately the size of a conventional computer mouse.

Unless the urodynamics study indicates back flow of urine into the kidneys, it would appear yours are in range. Do you have any historical data from renal ultra sounds that would verify the size your kidneys have been over time?

All the best,
GJ

yes i do have a really small left kidney that actually is only functioning at 25% the that was almost 2 years ago when they did the imaging for my urostomy. it is at least 3 to 4 centimeters smaller in both directions i am due for another imaging study of it to determine how it is functioning again.

Did they put anything up your butt?

It's not truly awkward until they put something up your butt.

Thank you guys for the kidney info.

Phillis~ I loved LeMack! He was great. Thank you for the referral!

Brian~ The nurse said she needed me to get on the table after I pee'd so that she could cath me and find out how much was left in my bladder. Once she got the cath done she said, I need to do a rectal cath on you as well. I said NO YOU DON'T! I told her I have a colostomy and that I wasn't willing to share it with her. She said no problem! It was awkward enough without someone toying with the bung hole!

Overall, great experience! The staff at Dr LeMack's office were too much fun!

I had the exact same thing done this year Offroader! The nurse had me cracking up too! She kept telling me that people that are drawn to urology work are weird - she said that as she shared that she's worked in the UTSW urology clinic for over 20 years!! Too funny. I really do love Dr. LeMack though. He's so so knowledgeable about SCI and SCI urological problems. Glad you had a good experience (umm I mean you know.... )
