Lose your phone, keep your contacts

http://mobilebackup.att.com/faqs.html#42

My cellphone fell out of my purse and got run over by a 3/4 ton Dodge pickup. Luckily I had just subscribed to this AT&T service that backs up your contacts. For $1.99/month, your contact list is backed up to a satellite every week.

Of course I'm having the usual "I need a phone NOW, my contract doesn't run out for 2 months, whatta ya mean a new phone will be $250?"

Got a Gophone at walmart for $15, put my old sim card in it. Reloaded my contacts from the phone book in the sky. And voila back in business.

If your service offers this option, it is worth $24 a year imo.

Bad news is my phone got run over, good news is it wasnt in my back pocket at the time.

That data backup is a good idea. The last time I got a new phone it was a CDMA and took days just to transfer all of my contacts to the new phone. It was a long time ago and they didn't have the fancy transfer stuff available at the time.

God I hate the phone companies. I've been trying to get a good phone without a contract for about a year now. The phones I've been looking at either suck or are just too much money. ATT has one th is made of rubber for heavy duty abuse and it has a loop on it for a lanyard so you can wear it. I like the rubber phone because I tend to drop things all the time. But boy is it expensive.

With Verizon if you subscribe to their Verizon wireless online service (which is free) they provide this backup service free of charge as long as you stay subscribed. If you are not able to have an online account I think it is also $1.99 a month. Mine automatically backs up the contacts daily. It has been a lifesaver a couple of times.

Sorry to hear about your phone, normally I would think so close to the contract they would allow you to get a new phone and contract. That stinks. Hopefully you get something worked out soon.
