Cost of cure
I have in my head that Wise once estimated a mere $500 million. Could that be possible? Estimates anyone?

Randy, sorry for the delayed response. I just wrote a "long" response to your question. You can find it on http://wiseyoung.wordpress.com
Thanks. Wise. Quote:

People really need to realize how complex this issue is. Inhibitory factors are nothing to be ignored. It's mind boggling to me how many people who claim to be research advocates are so incredibly ignorant in this area. C. |

You are right that I have been quite slippery about the cost of cure issue. After Randy asked the question, I decided to take a stab at an estimate. As you can see, it was quite harrowing. I had to define cure, assume that it would take 12 years to get a therapy from discovery to market, and come up with some costs. But, perhaps the most difficult part was figuring the probability of success. The exercise itself was useful, however, because it gives an outer bound to the cost. Wise. |

Thank you Wise! That was very illuminating, and a beautiful framework for thinking about things. I hope you will indulge my quantitatively challenged brain, but I was surprised about the little difference in cost if phase 3 (clinical trials) is all that’s left vs. the big difference in time, until I processed that the clinical trial stage is magnitudes more expensive than the other two equally lengthy phases. Is this right?
More importantly, are we somewhat there? If so, how promising is the first wave? Even while we presumably ramp up after Bush emancipation, are there a good number of therapies ready even now for trials, if not for universal cure, maybe for significant recovery in an incomplete? (Is that even a meaningful distinction?) Other than the CDRPA, is there anything in the pipeline to set up trials? How best can we advocate / put on pressure? Among the reasons for my cost question: current events have me ruminating about our societal investment priorities... and of course fuming about where they are falling, and trying to think of ways to point out publically what a miniscule fraction of the billions spent due to the greed and hubris on Wall Street would so radically improve so many lives. If I’m being naïve, please let me know before I embarrass myself. I love the wordpress consolidation of things. Please see my post in administration when you have time. |
