sat aug 16 glen cove NY, new adaptive outrigger paddling
figure i better cross post here , since i know i miss or see too late a lot of events posted only in the ny state forum.
interested parties should call or email and make sure the facilities are going to be ok. i tried to email United Spinal using their web page link last night , both email links popped the 503? not found page. i would like to get the word out to the Bronx VA, i know they have a good athletic program. Glenn cove is pretty close to the Bronx and NYC. I want to reach out to mt Sinai and the other rehab hospital. i know this new chapter is going to need help from the organizations and family. It does sound like it has great possibilities. Glenn Cove is a very nice area. DISABLED SPORTS USA ACCEPTS LONG ISLAND CHAPTER Disabilities of Glen Cove Kuleana Glen Cove, New York (August 16, 2008) - Milton Beamer, Executive Director announced that DISABILITIES OF GLEN COVE KULEANA has been accepted by DISABLED SPORTS USA as it’s first Chapter on Long Island. DISABLED SPORTS USA has Chapters in 37 states and is one of the key organizations which work with the Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project. Mr. Beamer, a Physical Therapist is also a champion racer of outrigger canoes. He was brought up in Hawaii where he learned his sport and presently races up and down the East Coast as a member of the East Coast Outrigger Association. A couple of years ago while racing in Kent Island, Maryland, he had the opportunity to race with disabled servicemen – Wounded Warriors from Walter Reed Hospital. Mr. Beamer says, “That was a life changing experience I will never forget.” And he hasn’t. The word Kuleana is Hawaiian means responsibility. As soon as he was able, he applied to the Maryland home office of Disabled Sports USA to become a new Chapter. Milton Beamer strongly feels it is his Kuleana – responsibility - to give back to the community, the heroes of war and those with special needs. Saturday, August 16, 2008 a press conference will be held at 1:00 PM at the end of Garvies Point Road, alongside of the Hempstead Harbor Yacht Club – by the boat ramp. Outrigger Canoes, able-bodied and physically challenged volunteers, as well as elected officials will experience an outrigger canoe ride and officially declare the start-up of Disabilities of Glen Cove Kuleana. The City of Glen Cove represented by its Mayor Ralph Suozzi and Assemblyman Chuck Lavine will participate in the festivities We further expect other notables to make a surprise appearance. The mission of DS/USA and DGC Kuleana is “To provide the opportunity for individuals with physical disabilities to gain confidence and dignity through participation in sports, recreation and related educational programs.” See you on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at the end of Garvies Point Road. note: be careful there may be two ends of Garvey point road, i believe this one is by the firehouse, check first.
