June marks Wheel in Motion event
way to go
Thursday, May 12, 2005 09:41 June marks Wheel in Motion event BY HEIDI ULRICHSEN heidi@northernlife.ca To Craig Barclay, Wheels in Motion foundation president Rick Hansen is a superstar. Earl Black, local ambassador for Rick Hansen, and Craig Barclay will be participating in the event June 12. Back in 1986, Barclay met the famed Olympic wheelchair athlete as he rolled through Sudbury during his Man in Motion world tour. Between 1985 and 1987, Hansen raised about $26 million for spinal cord injury research. "I shook his hand, and then he went on his way," says the Sudbury man, who uses a wheelchair because he was born with spina bifida. Hansen's legs were paralyzed as a teenager after his spinal cord was damaged in a car crash. "It was very inspiring at the time because I wanted to do my own little mini Man in Motion tour for Sudbury, but because of shoulder injuries, I couldn't." Barclay is among approximately 150 Sudburians who will be wheeling, biking, running and walking to raise money during the Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion event June 12. The event starts at Science North at 10 am. Similar events are also being held across the country on the same day. Last year, Sudbury's event raised about $10,000. http://www.northernlife.ca/lifestyle...pn=&view=87716 "All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given you." Gandolf the Gray |
