Trouble Inserting Catheter/Blood in Catheter

My friend was just in the hospital for what she thought was a kidney infection only for the doctors to later tell her it was a false alarm, but she doesn't really trust their opinion because they had zero knowledge on how to treat someone with a SCI. So now when she caths she is having trouble inserting the catheter. She has to force it in and experienced a lot of pressure and AD symptoms. When she pulled the catheter out it was very bloody. And now it keeps happening. Has anyone ever experienced this or have any advice? She doesn't want to go back to that hospital because of the horrible experience she had.

She may have created a false passage in the urethra with the catheter tip. Usually treatment for this condition is insertion of an indwelling catheter. The indwelling catheter should be worn for 2-3 weeks to allow the false passage to heal. Once the false passage is healed, it is suggested to try intermittent catheterization again, possibly using a smaller catheter.

Alternatively, she may have bladder stones.

Does your friend have a regular urologist? When was the last time she saw a urologist for an exam, urodynamics studies, order for renal ultra sound, etc.? Going to a hospital emergency unit for these conditions may not be the most efficient way to get treatment. She needs to have an established connection with a urologist.

All the best,
GJ

It would be good for her to get a cystoscopy - catheter w/camera that looks into the urethra then into the bladder. It will detect any internal damage of the urethra and look at the interior of the bladder.

A urologist and even better a neurourologist would be the speciallist I would recommend.
