Dale B, I heeded your advice and I took a 4 hour MA Basic Firearms Safety Course today. The last part was live shooting at the indoor firing range. *I shot a Ruger Mark III semi-automatic .22 pistol and a S & W .22 revolver. *I pounded 30 rounds into a paper target 15 ft. away. *It was impossible for me to hold the pistols up and use the sights so I shot from the hip. *I thought I did pretty good for a first timer. *I never shot any type of firearm before. *At least I hit the target on 26 of 30 my shots.
I preferred the semi-automatic but it was impossible for me to firmly grip the slide and pull it back to the to check the chamber. The trigger pull was only 5lbs. and manageable for me. *The guys there said a gunsmith could make virtually any legal modifications and adjustments to a firearm so it would be functional and yet safe for my abilities. The revolver was ok but very heavy and only holds 6 rounds. Anyway, for $100 it was pretty cool, I got a Basic MA Firearms Safety Certificate and I might look into doing some indoor target shooting and eventually get a License to Carry (LTC). Like you said, this shooting range will let me try out and use their pistols at their indoor facility. *I doubt I'd ever be "packing" but perhaps at some point I would just get my own pistol. *Thanks again for your wise and sound advice. Here is the place I went; http://www.massfirearmsschool.com/ |

The Sig Sauer p232 is a great gun, it's a .380 cal (close to a 9mm, only slightly shorter bullets) http://www.sigsauer.com/CatalogProductDetails/p232.aspx

That's fantastic, smokey. I hope you go back, and try some more! I absolutely LOVE the Ruger Mark III. I shot mine this past Friday, actually. Well, I've gutted mine and replaced the internals with Mark II parts from Volquartsen, including the hammer, sear, trigger, magazine safety bushing and slide stop detent. It shoots like a dream, with a 2.5lb trigger! I've trained several good folks on the finer point's of pistol marksmanship with that handgun. I'm glad the folks you were with steered you in the right direction!
You know, they make an aftermarket piece called a 'slide pull' assist, which is essentially a ring attached to the slide. I've seen one fitted on a Mark III, by a gunsmith, for a guy with CP. If you can get a finger through it, you can rack it. Especially with the Mark III, it has a very light recoil spring, being a .22LR. There is also a new Mark III for this year, which is called the "Lite". It has a polymer frame and an aluminum barrel (as opposed to all steel in the standard Mark III). It's HALF the weight!!! If you can get to a local gun shop with one in stock, I'd try it, if I were you. You may find it much easier to manage. Add a slide pull assist and you could be in business, for some fun target shooting! Major kudos for taking a class! I take one every year, at least, and have taught them, in the past. Well worth the time, even for folks who consider themselves experienced. ![]() Quote:

My very first shot was with a Ruger 10/22, walnut stock, circa 1980. Those rifles are classic. I bought one for my 10 year old son this past Christmas, the "Take Down" model, which breaks into 2 pieces, and fits into a nice little case, easy for him to carry to and fro. Dead nutz accurate and reliable as all get out. We haven't pushed it past 25yds, so far, but with the weather cooling off it's time to head to the outdoor range, and they have 100, 200, and 500yd rifle stations! (Not that we need much more than 100yds, for the 10/22.) I've added an inexpensive red dot sight to the top, along with the BX-25 magazines, and it has become one of the best plinkers in the safe! Shoots for a good while between reloads (cheaply!), it's very quiet, no recoil, etc, it's just perfect for causal shooting. Add something to help hold it up, like a monopod/bipod/tripod, and I would have no problem recommending it to a quad, with a couple modifications to help make working the bolt release a little less insane (using Volquartsen aftermarket parts). I really like the laminated stock you're running, there. Nice fluted barrel, too. Very slick!

Thanx i couldn't hold a pistol up so someone suggested i try benchrest shooting a small calibre rifle, i just use a sand bag setup works very well. It is a sweet shooting setup and loads of cheap fun, we only have 25 yds indoors but with the long cold winters thats just fine. |

Dale B, Thx again for the tip on the "slide pull assist". I am kind of surprised something like this already exists. But I suppose with gun enthusiasts getting older, many women becoming interested in using a handgun and others simply lacking good digital dexterity or hand strength it may be a little more common than I thought.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxItqx_Paks Also, I came upon this clip loader. It only loads .22 caliber ammo though. It looks terrific for anybody. As a firearms junkie you are probably aware of it already but it looks like it would be extremely helpful for me. Check it out; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wFM9YFbKak |

Dale, I've got a ruger mkII SS bull barrel pistol. just curious why you put mkII parts in a mkIII? My guess is lighter and smoother trigger pull.

Also, The MkIII came with a series of "safety" enhancements which are eliminated by using MkII parts. This creates a much safer pistol, ironically, and one far easier to break down, clean, and use. A slight reliability gain, too, but the Ruger Mk series have never suffered on that front.

Yeah, I love my ruger MkII, I also have a super Blackhawk, bought both of them used for 150 each about 30 years ago, Have a Remington adl .270, bought that used for 150 25 years ago, haven't shot them since my injury, need to take them out and see, have pachmyers on the super Blackhawk, but it's still going to be iffy being a c-4 incomplete.
