Car Transfer

How do you protect the exterior and interior of your car from scratches caused by breaking down and loading the wheelchair into the passengers seat when solo.

I just picked up a fun weekend car that I would like to not beat up like the first car I got when I was a newbie. I still will drive my van as my primary mode of transportation.

Any ideas other then just being careful.

Thanks

I have an old piece of carpet cut to the size I need. (25" x 15" thereabouts)

On the end that hangs over the inside cill, I have nailed 2 pieces of wooden baton (2x1" about 10" long - with some lead sheet cut to the same size as the batons sandwiched in between for weight) and hammered the nails flat into the wood at the other side.

When I'm done with the transfer I just fold the carpet in half and chuck it in the passenger foot well.

I'm sure there are better ideas, if you get one let me know!

I just use a large towel draped over the side. If you know a mechanic they can probably give you one of those slip resistant pads they use over the side of the car when they are leaning over the engine to work on the car. They ususally get them for free from the manufacturers

I just got a roll of 3m clear vinyl that im going to put on my side skirts so my chair doesnt scratch the paint. If it scuffs up the vinyl I can pull it off and put a new piece on. My car isnt done yet so I dont have any ideas for the inside yet. What kind of car did you get

I wish I'd thought to do this. Because that part of my car is plastic (Honda element) its super scratched and not repairable.

Thanks for all the ideas.

Kr420am, The mechanic slip resistant pad might be just the right size, I'll have to see if I can find one.

Wills77, Have you tried the 3M vinyl on anything, would it take paint with it if you replaced the vinyl. Whats the primary use for this product.

No it wouldn't take the paint off. It is the same material that they make clear bras out of that comes on a lot of new cars. Its also used for lettering on the side of trucks/trailers for advertising. Theres places doing full vinyl wraps on cars.
Another idea I have is plastidip. You can get it in spray cans in color or just clear. People are doing whole cars with it now. You could do 5 layers of clear on the side skirts and it lasts for about a year. Whenever you want you can peel it off just like vinyl.
I have heard of people using the soft side of velcro for the kick panel that gets covered when the door is shut. It has a sticky back on it and is somewhat soft in case you hit your legs transfering. It will look similar to really thin black carpet.
You'll have fun in that. My dad had one of them. Im rebuilding a 04 gto right now.
