I never really met her when I worked for NASA but she was certainly an inspiration. A week prior, Forrest McCartney died. He was my boss when he was center director. We all loved him as director. He was a commander on an early shuttle mission. One of the main engines shut down on the way up...they did an abort to orbit...didn't get exactly where they needed to be in space but still successfully completed the mission

"High Flight"

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even[8] eagle flew —
And, while with silent lifting mind I have trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

Only 61 years old. No news of the cause of death.
RIP, Ms. Ride.

All the best,
GJ

She taught physics at UC San Diego, right next door to where I work. She did great work after being an astronaut too...wrote 6 science books for children, and promoted a program that encouraged little girls to consider a career in the sciences.

She had pancreatic cancer (the same one that killed my father) and was only 61. It is a horrible disease.

Yes, just heard a new report that she died from pancreatic cancer. The first report I heard was a statement from her partner of 27 years, Tam O'Shaughnessy, who said she (Sally Ride) was a very private person and only a few close to her knew of her illness.

All the best,
GJ
