We are considering a van with a ramp which allows a wheelchair to rol into the back. From the back I would like to be able to transfer to the passenger or drivers seat. The problem is that the seats do not rotate making a transfer difficult or impossible. Is it possible to retrofit vans for a reasonable price so that the seats do turn (preferably with equipment used by the able bodied world) and if so how would it be done.

I'm in the process of getting a van with a ramp and a 6-way transfer seat for the drivers seat...you can get one in passenger seat as well. From what I u understand the drivers seat is taken out and put on a base with a track and then reinstalled. This allows for you to retain airbags that were in the seat, on newer models, and seat belt, etc. There are toggle switches on the side that allow the seat to pivot for transfer, and move forward / back. It is the original seat from the van so an AB can drive sit in it too.
I have no clue on cost, the modifications to my van are being paid for by buerro of rehab services. |

Google 6-way transfer seat. Lots of people make them and dealers install them. They are going to be disability equipment and expensive.

You can have 6 way power seats on both the drivers and passengers side to transfer into. Or just remove the passengers seat and get secured in your power or manual wheelchair.

Look up "Mobility Works" on line to get an idea what is available to get you in the right direction..

I had a "Transfer Seat" installed on my old van. It was a $1500 option. It uses the original drivers seat. I already had power seats, but the transfer seat came with its own controls. Their switches let you turn the seat 90 degrees, raise or lower the seat and elevate or lower the seat. It worked fine for me except I am too tall.
Good luck. |
