It doesn't affect your current emails. Basically it removes the space left from the deleted emails.

Visualize it as if this symbol | represents a single email message. Before compacting the messages in your Inbox would be arranged like: |.....|..|......|...|.|......|...|..|......|
and after compacting they would be like ||||||||||

Oldtimer, I also have Outlook and it is on Windows XP. Here is how I do it. I go to Inbox and then click a combination of keys Ctrl + A. This way you select all of your messages. After that, when all of the messages are selected, just click Delete :-) I hope that helps!
