Need some help from my people please
Hello everyone,
I am T-10 complete and need to know about some options for umm, well, peeing during a trip I'm going on this weekend. I normally just pee on the toilet like pre injury but this weekend we are riding our motorcycle (we have a trailer that pulls my chair and camping equipment) 4 hours away to stay at the lake where we will be out on a pontoon boat all weekend. We ride our bike nearly every weekend and take breaks and I just use accessible public restrooms like normal so that part is fine. I am more concerned about being out on the boat because there are no restrooms available for me to use. With that being said, I have the following questions that I need your help with. I am curious if using a indwelling cath with a leg bag would be an option and is it something that I could put in on my own for just this weekend? Are there bed pan type things that I could use to transfer over to on the seat of the boat and then just empty the bed pan? It seems like I've seen thin bed pan type things that resemble a toilet seat???? In the past I have just taken a catheter with me and pee'd in a water bottle or something. This time we will have friends with us. I usually just go in a private cove or in the middle of the lake where no one can tell what I'm doing. Our friends are more than happy to sit at the back of the boat and face the other direction while I handle my business but I want to make it as smooth and efficient as possible. Any suggestions would be great. Also, would I need to order these types of things online or do local pharmacy and medical equipment companies sell these usually? P.S. I have a colostomy that I irrigate so I just need suggestions on how I can pee. Thanks so much. I love having this forum to come to about the "personal" matters that no one else can advise me on.

No need to get all complicated and medical if you can pee on your own volition and your friends are willing to turn their back. Just get a good size measuring cup of plastic or stainless steel (depending on your bladder capacity, but a 24 oz should work). Just scoot forward in your chair as much as you can. If you have elastic waist slacks it makes it easier. Put cup in the right location, making sure it is upright so there is no spilling. Go and then add to the lake. Put used kleenex (for wiping) in a zip top bag and dispose of properly.

I just ordered a stainless steel bedpan and a gel foam topper to protect my butt. I'm going to place it on the seat of the boat, transfer on to it and pee like normal. That will be the quickest and easiet way to do it.
Thanks for the suggestion Eileen. I appreciate your quick response.

A foley and bag would work, and you could do it yourself. I do when I am traveling. But I have to cath anyway.
Since you don't need to cath to go, I think Eileen is right, the foley is to invasive for what you need. There are plasic female urinals that might work better than using a cup, but your transfer plan should work too. Have fun on your trip. This sort of thing .... http://www.amazon.com/Freshette-Spor...f=pd_sim_hpc_3

One of my best friends post-injury was another quad. We did a lot of things together, including a trip to DC among other things. He taught me the measuring cup thing because if anyone looks it doesn't look like something used for urine. He carried his in a leather shoe tote, and always asked before we left his house if his "bowling shoes" were with us!

These are my notes from a few years ago (so I'm not sure what's still available). I forget what my situation was at the time, but evidently I thought these might help. Some are self-contained and disposable, some are just funnels that you can direct a little away from you, or you can connect tubes to them to empty further away.

I always cath into a mountain dew bottle for the same reason, and the green plastic hides the contents if I can;t empty it right away.

All of these are good suggestions, especially marking the bottle with a "X". Hadn't thought of that issue before.
One word of caution on the bedpan - they can increase your chances of developing a pressure sore, so PLEASE be careful! It sounds as though you have a plan and that it will work, just adding a word of caution. Also a reminder to make sure that you drink plenty of fluids and put on some sunscreen! Have fun! Sounds like a great weekend! CKF |
