Meet the Scientists - A Visit to the Reeve-Irvine Research Center

by Marilyn SmithDonna Sullivan and I had the opportunity to attend this year's "Meet the Scientists" Forum, held annually at the Reeve-Irvine Research Center (RIRC) in Irvine, California, site of this year's Working 2 Walk . If you're not familiar with the RIRC, here's a little bit of history:

1996: Ms. Joan Irvine-Smith donates $1 million to start a spinal cord injury research center and invites Christopher Reeve to participate. RIRC is launched!

1999; The University of California/Irvine recruits Dr. Oswald Steward as Director for RIRC. He begins to create a research facility dedicated to collaboration, communication, and cooperation within the California, national and international SCI research communities.

2000: The Roman Reed Spinal Cord Injury Act is signed into law in California, providing $1-2 million annually to fund research at the RIRC.

2010: The Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center opens on the UCI campus adjacent to the RIRC.

The Reeve-Irvine Research Center has assembled an outstanding team of scientists to work in state-of-the-art facilities on the UC Irvine campus. In addition to benefiting from generous state & private funding, RIRC receives support from numerous community advocates.
