A standard bowel care program done every other day is recommended by many rehabilitation centers. Just increasing the number of times a week you do a bowel program may help a lot.

Diet can play a part in how much gas you produce. Here are some foods that are generally thought to produce excessive gas:
* Milk and dairy products
* Starchy foods like potatoes and pasta
* Wheat and oat bran
* Foods sweetened with artificial sweeteners, such as soda, gum, and hard candy
* Bananas, peaches, apricots, pears, and raw apples
* Raisins and melons
* Prunes and prune juice
* Colas and fruit drinks sweetened with fructose
* Beans and lentils
* Onions, green peppers, shallots, and scallions
* Cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and peas
* Corn, celery, artichokes, asparagus, and carrots
Some of these foods may not bother you at all, some may really cause you problems. You might want to eliminate these foods from your diet for a few days, then start to add them back one at a time to see which ones bother you the most, and then try to avoid eating them too often or in large quantities.

All the best,
GJ

Add B-12 to your diet. Take one tablet per day with breakfast. Alfalfa tablets also helps. Both from WalMart for about $3-4 each.

I would agree with doing bowel care at least 3X weekly.

Excessive gas is nearly always diet related. Keep a dietary diary, and pay attention to what you had to eat in the last 3 days. Try eliminating one food at a time that you had in the 2-3 days prior to having gas problems. This will help you determine what is worsening this problem.

Over-the-counter medications such as Beano are helpful for some.

Some people do well with medicinal charcoal tablets, but you must be careful as they can interfere with absorption of certain medications. Check with your pharmacist if you plan to go this route.

When I fart, I know everythiong is still working O.K. I have noticed since SCI, I no longer have the "silent, but deadly" farts, they are always loud and sometimes sound like I crap myself.

Do you advise any other laxative, which can be taken on a long term, without any side effects?
