Engine repairs - 2nd opinion

For the last six months I have been having engine light problems on my van. I drive a 1999 Volkswagen Eurovan with 124,000 miles on it. My 1991 Volkswagen Vanagon got over 175,000 miles out of it. Since it's out of warranty I take my Eurovan to a foreign import repair shop where they charge a less expensive rate per hour. I had it there 3 times and it all deals with the ERG valve system.

First time there were several dry, cracked and brittle hoses that were replaced. Second time the ERG valve was replaced. Third time they replaced another hose and several days later the light came back on. The mechanic told if it continues that they would have to drop the engine and transmission with the axles and wheels. Remove the head and have the "ports" grounded out. Running in the price range of $4,000.00 to $5,000.00!

It just didn't sound right.

I took it to Midas and had the muffler replaced. On the Eurovan the muffler pressure is checked which could cause the engine light to come on but I didn't really think that was the main problem. It was time the muffler needed to be replaced. Midas ran a diagnostic and found a list of 16 items it could be but no grinding of ports was listed. Hmmm? What's going on here?

I made an appointment at the Volkswagen dealership service department to look at it. I wanted to know what was wrong before they made any repairs. No problem. They found the solenoid that controls the ERG valve not working all the time. They replaced it and caused the same thing. So they checked the 50 amp fuse that is located under the hood by the battery and exposed to the elements that powers the solenoid. It was all corroded including the fuse holder. Replaced fuse and fuse holder. $400.00 out the door washed and delivered to my home!

Engine light fixed!

If you get a costly repair charge for engine service, get a second opinion.
