Mitrofanoff procedure and bowels

Hi there,

My 2 year old son (spina bifida L5-S1/neurogenic bladder) had a Mitrofanoff procedure a week from today. A large hernia was also found and operated. His bowels were not functional until day 2, when I stimulated to get a result. Ever since, though, he went from a scheduled bowel a day (which was mildly induced) to having his diaper stained 4 times a day.

I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience and whether this could be indicative of something gone wrong in relation to the intestine.

Thank you in advance.

It is not uncommon for bowel programs to get screwed up right after this surgery. Make sure that he is doing all the things he was before the surgery - eating, drinking, activity level, medications and whatever the program was (even if you don't get results). The further out that he gets from the surgery, the more regulated he will become. Part of it is that he has some medications in his system that slow down his intestine - part is the change in diet (temporary) and also remember that his intestine was cleaned out prior to the surgery.
Give it a little time but make sure that you get him back on the routine he was on.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions!!
