Well I got the Kodak P725 from Amazon. Not really cheap ($74) but the color is amazing. Probably a good gift for the non-techy.

The good:

1) The photos are really beautiful - often better than the original
2) It is very simple to operate - a few buttons on the top
3) It seems to behave (reliable)
4) Has the random photo function
5) Takes a USB stick, different cards, etc.

The annoying:

1) Very simplistic add/delete photos function - either one at a time, or all of them.

2) No sub-folders, different slide shows, etc. Just random or in order, that's it.

3) If you want your photos shown in order, it has that feature. BUT it is mildly demented. You might think it would use the date the photo was take - no. Or the date the file was created - no. Or the name of the file even - no.

The stupid thing uses the date modified.

If you load your pics right from the camera card, there will not be a problem.

However if you had a bunch of vacation pics, which were in order, and you loaded them to your computer and cropped one - that one would now be last when you load them back to the frame. Terrific (not).

This can be solved (with a virtual sledgehammer) - I downloaded a little program "SetFileDate" and can fix the date/times.

Also, Kodak has free software PhotoShare which you can use to put pics in order and then you export them. This works fine - what it does is set all the dates to today, and incrementally ups the time by a second. Which is ok, as long as you add your photos (vacations) in date order, and never want to insert anything in the middle.

But - did I mention, the color is fantastic!

if it has the random photo feature, why care about the date modified?

I saw a 7" on kmarts webpage yesterday for 39, regular 49, guess they've come down aot from last year

Oh, the random works fine - dates don't matter there.

But it also has an option to play in order. I am putting photos for my friend, from childhood through now - and want them to play in order for her.

For that, it is looking at the date modified, which I have to correct.
